A surprising manga series from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is being adapted into a live-action movie, and the release date has been announced. While Shonen Jump is experiencing some changes this spring with series endings and new beginnings, many of its popular stories are finding success in other formats. This includes bringing back older franchises, and one in particular is generating a lot of excitement as an unexpected adaptation.
The popular series High School Family is returning as a live-action movie! After ending three years ago, fans will be happy to hear it’s coming to Japanese theaters on January 8th. Originally, the release was only planned for sometime this fall, but the official date has now been confirmed. You can watch the first teaser trailer below.
High School Family Live-Action Movie Confirms Release Date
The live-action movie adaptation of High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku will premiere in Japan on January 8, 2027. Currently, there are no announced plans for releasing the film internationally. Toei will distribute the movie in Japan, and Toichiro Ruto will direct, based on a script by Makoto Ueda of Europe Kikaku. Although the series is returning in this unexpected way, it hasn’t been a major hit with international audiences.
Ryo Nakama’s manga series first appeared in Shonen Jump in 2020 and ran for over 100 chapters before concluding. While it didn’t gain much traction outside of Japan, it was successful enough to continue longer than many other series. A key to its longevity was its comedic focus on the everyday lives of a charming family in a peculiar situation, rather than a complex overarching story.
What’s Special About High School Family

The live-action adaptation of High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku will feature Riisa Naka as the mother, Shizuka, Shingo Katori as the father, Ichiro, Jun Saito as the son, Kotaro, and Yuno Nagao as the daughter, Haruka. The entire family – even their cat, Gomez – all start high school at the same time, leading to hilarious and unexpected adventures. The series is about giving adults a do-over and embracing a new chapter in their lives.
This charming series is a bit of a hidden gem. It probably didn’t get much attention from fans of Shonen Jump because bigger titles like My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen were so popular. However, if the upcoming live-action movie captures the heart of the original, it could lead to even greater things for this sweet family story.
