This year, Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump has already cancelled ten popular manga series, and more cancellations are possible. Following the end of several long-running and successful titles late last year and early this year, Shueisha is actively searching for the next big hits. This has led to many new series launching, but also a higher number of cancellations as they quickly evaluate what’s working.
As a huge fan of Shonen Jump, I’m always excited to see new series start, and Fall is when they usually launch a bunch! But, sadly, that also means some existing titles get cancelled. We already knew Ekiden Bros was ending last week, and now it’s been confirmed that Yoshiharu Kataoka’s Ping-Pong Peril is also wrapping up. It’s a shame – it only ran for 17 chapters! That makes it the tenth series cancelled by Jump this year, which is a bit disappointing.
Ping-Pong Peril Cancelled at Shonen Jump After 17 Chapters

Yoshiharu Kataoka’s manga, Ping-Pong Peril, has been cancelled after the latest issue of Shonen Jump, following reports earlier this week. This adds it to a growing list of series cancelled before reaching 20 chapters, similar to Ekiden Bros and Kaedegami which ended earlier this fall. Sadly, Ping-Pong Peril is now one of ten series cancelled by the magazine this year. Considering the other series that have naturally concluded, Shonen Jump is experiencing a significant amount of change.
This year, Shonen Jump has completely stopped publishing ten different manga series. In addition, three other series – Undead Unluck, Mission: Yozakura Family, and Kill Blue – finished their planned storylines. That brings the total number of series ending in the magazine this year to thirteen. Here’s a breakdown of what happened:
- Undead Unluck
- Mission: Yozakura Family
- Hakutaku (Cancelled)
- Astro Royale (Cancelled)
- Syd Craft: Love Is a Mystery (Cancelled)
- Super Psychic Policeman Chojo (Cancelled)
- Star of Beethoven (Cancelled)
- Embers (Cancelled)
- Kill Blue
- Nice Prison (Cancelled)
- Kaedegami (Cancelled)
- Ekiden Bros (Cancelled)
- Ping-Pong Peril (Cancelled)
What Does This Mean for Shonen Jump’s Future?
I’m really excited about what’s happening with Shonen Jump! They’re not slowing down at all – the newest issue just launched a fantastic new series called The Mage Next Door, and they’ve got another one planned for next week! It’s awesome to see them constantly introducing fresh stories. We’re also going to be saying goodbye to a couple of favorites soon, as both The Elusive Samurai and Sakamoto Days are wrapping up in the next few weeks and months. It’s a bit bittersweet, but it definitely makes way for all these new adventures!
We could see even more series end as new ones begin, and significant changes are likely in the years ahead. Shonen Jump seems to be canceling shows more quickly this year as it looks for its next big hit, but hopefully this will stabilize soon, giving more series a fair chance to succeed.
