Several popular manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump have recently concluded, including *My Hero Academia* and *Jujutsu Kaisen*. Other long-running titles like *One Piece* and *Black Clover* are also heading towards their endings. While many new series are trying to take their place, Shonen Jump hasn’t hesitated to cancel newer titles that aren’t performing well. Sadly, this means fans will have to say goodbye to *Kaedegami* with its cancellation this week.
If you haven’t heard of *Kaedegami*, it’s a new shonen manga series that started in June by creator Jun Harukawa. Harukawa is also known for previous works like *What a Tremendous Numinose, Kohitsuji Tora o Nasu* and *Hakai Sareta Gensupu*. Unfortunately, the story of Kou and his world of monsters is ending after only seventeen chapters, barely giving it time to develop a beginning, let alone a full story arc. With the final chapter due out on Viz Media soon after its release in Japan, it’s very unlikely this series will get an anime adaptation.
Say Goodbye To Shonen
Several things determine whether Shonen Jump cancels a manga series. While sales and how many people are reading it are important, Shueisha also gets direct feedback from readers. Each week, fans rank the series in Weekly Shonen Jump, and it seems *Kaedegami* just didn’t gain enough popularity to keep going. It wasn’t the only one; series like *Embers*, *Super Psychic Policeman Chojo*, and *MamaYuyu* were also discontinued.
There’s still a chance Kaedegami could get an anime adaptation, and a recent example gives fans hope. Despite being canceled after just over a year, *Super Psychic Policeman Chojo* is getting an anime series next year thanks to Studio Arvo Animation. It’s currently unknown whether the studio will expand on the original story with new content.
Even though *Kaedegami* is no longer being published, you can still read the complete series (except for the final, unreleased chapter) on Viz Media’s website. The story centers around Kou, who was abandoned as a child and agrees to be possessed by the monster who raised him, hoping to help her regain something she’s lost.
