Shonen Jump Likely Ready to Cancel Its First Major Series in 2026

Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump is starting the new year with news that another popular series may be ending soon. 2025 was a year of big changes for the magazine, with 13 major series concluding. While some of these series finished their stories naturally, ten were cancelled, leaving their creators unable to fully develop their ideas. Now, it looks like 2026 will see another cancellation early in the year.

I’ve been noticing a lot of talk among fans about potential series cancellations in 2025, and it looks like Yuki Kawaguchi’s Out of the Flame is unfortunately becoming one of them. It’s a real shame, especially since this creator had a previous series cut short with fewer than 20 chapters. It seems like Out of the Flame is headed the same way; the final battle started in chapter 33, suggesting it won’t be long before the series ends.

Otr of the Flame Nears Cancellation With Final Battle

The year 2025 saw the conclusion of Otr of the Flame with the introduction of the King of the Ice Kingdom, a major character the story had been building towards. Otr also strengthened his connection with the Flame Spirit, leading to a powerful new combined form. However, with the release of Chapter 33, it’s become apparent that the series is wrapping up quickly, as all the Spirits and their warriors have unexpectedly converged in one location.

The reappearance of the legendary Evil King truly signals the story’s climax. This powerful enemy was the original reason the Five Spirits united, and has been foreshadowed as the ultimate challenge in Otr’s long journey. With both the Ice King and the Evil King now present, the final battle is about to begin. Otr and the Ice King will join forces with the spirits one last time to save the world and bring the series to a close.

What’s Going to Happen to Otr of the Flame?

If the climax with Otr of the Flame is beginning now, the decisive blow will probably happen in the next one or two chapters. The story will either end quickly with a brief conclusion, or have enough space for a final battle and then a concluding chapter to wrap things up. Either way, it must be difficult for author Yuki Kawaguchi, as they experienced a similar situation when their previous series, The Hunter’s Guild: Red Hood, was cancelled.

Despite being quite different from his previous work and lasting over 20 chapters, Otr of the Flame didn’t become very popular with Shonen Jump readers. It had interesting powers, creative concepts, and good artwork, but it just didn’t quite resonate with the audience. Hopefully, if the series is cancelled, the author, Kawaguchi, won’t be discouraged and will create something new in the future.
