The third season of “Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc,” an adaptation of the long-standing Kinnikuman franchise, is returning to our screens. This new anime series, created by Yudetamago, a pen name for collaborators Takashi Shimada and Yoshinori Nakai, premiered on July 7, 2024. The series was developed by Production I.G and secured a global release on Netflix’s streaming platform. Though it received mixed reviews on MyAnimeList, its success in Japan and on Netflix led to the renewal of a second season.
Both seasons of Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc spanned eleven episodes each, wrapping up the second season on March 30th, 2025. At the Kinnikuman Chōjin Festival in 2025, it was revealed that there would be a third season. A promotional poster for Season 3 was unveiled, showing lead character Kinnikuman flexing and showcasing various scenes from the anime. The design of this Season 3 poster resembles the one used to announce the second season, although a more recent poster was revealed in November 2024. At present, no release date has been announced for Season 3 of Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc.
Why Kinnikuman Is a Big Deal
Kinnikuman is a long-standing media franchise originating from Japan, which began with its original manga series published in Weekly Shonen Jump between 1979 and 1987. This initial run spawned various merchandise like collectible toys, different anime adaptations, and spin-off manga titles. In 2011, Yudetamago decided to revive the classic Kinnikuman comic book series. The latest storyline, titled Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc, is a continuation rather than a reboot of the original series from the 70s and 80s.
1980s rebranding of Kinnikuman collectible erasers to M.U.S.C.L.E. marked one of the initial steps for collectible figures in the Western world. In 2002, the series “Ultimate Muscle” was the English translation by 4Kids Entertainment of “Kinnikuman Nisei,” airing for 77 episodes from 2002 to 2006. Produced by Toei Animation, Ultimate Muscle is still widely recognized as a popular Kinnikuman anime among North American fans. Since Ultimate Muscle ended, Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc marks the first full-length anime adaptation in the franchise.
The Adventures of Prince Kinnikuman in the Perfect Origin Saga
In the same vein as other tales in this franchise, our protagonist is none other than Prince Kinnikuman, a warrior hailing from another planet. Despite his bumbling nature and seemingly useless superhuman abilities (known as Chojin within the series), he managed to prove himself worthy by participating in wrestling competitions against various Chojin across the cosmos, even some with malicious intentions!
The Perfect Origin Saga unfolds following Prince Kinnikuman’s crowning as the new King of his home planet and the apparent establishment of peace on Earth. However, this tranquility was short-lived as different Chojin factions began to squabble among themselves. As a result, our hero came out of retirement to prevent newly emerged evil Chojin from wreaking havoc on the planet.
The Perfect Origin Saga delves into the origins of the Perfect Chojin, an esteemed group renowned for their unwavering commitment to justice. Despite their noble cause, they find themselves at odds with Kinnikuman and his allies.
