Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump recently launched a new science fiction fantasy series, and it could be the magazine’s next big hit. Shueisha has been working to find a replacement for several long-running series that ended recently, between late 2024 and early 2025. While some new titles have shown promise, the publisher is continuing to introduce new works in hopes of finding another popular series.
This year, Shonen Jump has already ended almost ten different series, but they’re planning to launch several new ones before the year ends. The latest issue features the first chapter of Shuhei Tanizaki’s Gonron Egg, which has a promising start and could become very popular. With its fresh take on the fantasy genre and exciting science fiction elements, Gonron Egg might be the success Shonen Jump needs.
Gonron Egg Makes a Promising Debut

Shuhei Tanizaki’s Gonron Egg takes place in a world dominated by alien monsters. Twenty years prior, the powerful Drakarchs of Gandala invaded Earth, causing society to fall apart. The surviving humans became slaves, and the story follows Gonron, who serves a monster named Abrolom. Gonron must constantly find food for Abrolom to avoid becoming a meal himself, leading a life filled with hardship and fear, as he lacks the strength to fight back against his oppressors.
An egg mysteriously falls from the sky and asks Gonron to keep it warm. As they spend time together, the egg, who reveals his name is Ohma, shares a surprising secret: he’s actually the lost prince of Gandala. Ohma explains that his father, the king, was overthrown by a powerful being named Agito, who is now threatening the human world. This revelation sets Gonron and Ohma on a new journey together.
Why Gonron Egg Is Standing Out So Far

After Gonron’s death, Ohma revives him with a special power, transforming him into a formidable warrior who immediately defeats his former master. Now, as Ohma attempts to awaken and take his rightful place as king, Gonron finds himself embarking on an unexpected and much larger adventure. This story blends classic fantasy tropes – a fallen prince and his unlikely ally – with a science fiction twist involving an alien invasion. The stunning visuals further enhance the experience.
Although we haven’t seen much of the world of Gonron Egg recently, the unique designs of the Drakarchs suggest some exciting battles are coming. Some fans worry that Gonron’s powered-up form is overly complicated compared to transformations in other popular manga, but it’s too early to say how it will play out. The biggest question is whether Shueisha will allow the series to continue past 20 chapters, or if it will be cancelled before then.
