Warning! Spoilers for Shrinking season 3, episode 7 ahead!
The seventh episode of ‘Shrinking’ season 3, titled ‘I Will Be Grape,’ continues the show’s trend of being quirky, funny, and surprisingly moving. Following the previous episode, ‘Dereks Don’t Die,’ where Derek had emergency heart surgery, the group is still processing the experience. Though scary, the surgery was successful and brought them all closer together.
After Jimmy’s predictably messy encounter with Paul’s daughter, Meg, he spent a lot of time worrying about it. However, in season 3, episode 6 of Shrinking, Jimmy came to see that, despite the complications, being with Meg gave him a glimmer of hope for his love life.
The sixth episode of Shrinking season 3 ended on a hopeful note with Derek doing well and Jimmy feeling optimistic. However, the episode concluded with a worrying development: Gaby’s patient, Maya, began to struggle with a crisis. Feeling incredibly lonely, Maya tried to contact Gaby but couldn’t reach her. This sets up the start of episode 7, where Maya cancels her appointment with Gaby and stops responding to her calls. The consequences of this play out later in the episode, after Alice and Jimmy focus on preparing for Tia’s birthday.
Alice Is Worried About Leaving Her Dad For College
Throughout the third season of Shrinking, Alice has been focused on graduating high school and starting college at Wesleyan University. In episode 7, her dad, Jimmy, suddenly realizes how quickly she’ll be leaving. He’d hoped they’d have the whole summer together, but Alice learns that soccer practice will start right after graduation.
Jimmy took the news that his summer plans were changing surprisingly well. He’d promised to be there for Alice, and he was determined to keep that promise. This time, however, Alice is the one who’s having a hard time. She’s anxious about leaving for college and leaving her dad all alone. This leads her to invite Louis to their aunt Tia’s birthday party, hoping that seeing him happy in a new relationship will encourage Jimmy to start moving on with his own life. If Jimmy finds romance, Alice will feel better about leaving for college, knowing her dad won’t be lonely.
Liz’s Mother-In-Law Is In Town To Help With Derek
Liz has a reputation for being difficult, and it turns out her mother-in-law, Constance, is even more challenging. In season 3, episode 7 of Shrinking, Constance comes to stay with Liz and Derek to help after Derek’s surgery, but the situation quickly becomes tense. Though Constance offers compliments and seems kind to Liz, her intense and prolonged eye contact makes Liz suspect she’s actually being subtly hostile.
Initially, no one believes Liz, but she’s eventually proven correct. This leads to a major conflict with Constance, and Derek, frustrated by everything, leaves home despite medical advice to go to the park. His departure forces his mother and wife to resolve their issues. The core of their conflict is Constance’s constant criticism of Liz’s parenting. While Constance wants to share her experience and offer guidance, she realizes she hasn’t been approaching it effectively. While Liz and Constance still have a way to go before fully reconciling, they do begin to make progress.
Everyone Is Determined To Keep Tia’s Birthday Positive
In season 3, episode 7 of Shrinking, it’s Tia’s birthday, the second one since she passed away. This year, everyone is focused on celebrating her life with positivity. A flashback reveals a past birthday where Jimmy and Tia joyfully sang karaoke together, with Tia famously misremembering the lyrics to Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years,” singing “I will be grape” instead of “I will be brave.” Because of this, her birthday became affectionately known as Grape Day.
The group spends Grape Day at the cemetery, acting irreverently with questionable clothing choices and playing a silly game in front of Tia’s gravesite. It’s then that Louis reappears, sharing that he’s successfully rebuilt his life after the accident that took Tia. Later in season 3, episode 7 of Shrinking, they celebrate Tia’s birthday with piano karaoke at Jimmy’s—but we’ll get to that part later.
Paul Asks Gaby To Take Over His Practice
For Paul, the latest season of Shrinking has focused on his plans for retirement. He started the season wanting to keep working indefinitely, but after his health improved and the hallucinations from Parkinson’s went away, he realized he wanted to retire on his own terms. Now, he still needs to figure out what will happen with his therapy practice.
In the seventh episode, Paul has a heartfelt conversation with Gaby. He acknowledges that she’s always felt he favored Jimmy, but he assures her that he values her greatly. He deeply admires her dedication and skill as a therapist and wants her to eventually take over his practice, which he’s worked so hard to build.
Gaby appreciates Paul’s generous offer, but she’s decided to pursue a different path for her career. She’s eager to tackle challenging cases and, after her positive experience with Maya, she’s determined to expand her professional horizons. She’s hoping to either open a center for treating trauma patients or start her own practice that goes beyond traditional talk therapy. Because of these goals, she politely declines Paul’s offer.
Jimmy Finally Asks Sofi On A Date
In the seventh episode of Shrinking’s third season, Alice’s support for Jimmy finally leads to positive results. Seeing Louis doing well reminds Jimmy of his commitments and motivates him to get his life back on track. Encouraged by his daughter, he finally asks Sofi out (played by Cobie Smulders). Though the actual date isn’t shown, the episode ends with Sofi attending the Grape Day karaoke night. It’s a somewhat uncomfortable first date – as Sofi acknowledges – but it’s a start.
Gaby Receives Terrible News In Shrinking Season 3, Episode 7’s Ending
The mood of Shrinking season 3, episode 7, changes dramatically when Gaby receives a phone call from Donna, a former patient who originally brought Maya to therapy. Although we don’t hear what Donna says, it’s clear that Maya has died by suicide.
It’s heartbreaking to hear this. Gaby and Maya had been making good progress, and Gaby was really connecting with Maya as her therapist, trying a new approach that seemed to be working. Unfortunately, in season 3, episode 6 of Shrinking, Maya’s deep loneliness reached a crisis point, and Gaby couldn’t be there for her because of Derek’s unexpected surgery.
Gaby isn’t to blame for what happened. However, Maya’s death will definitely affect Gaby’s choices in the future. Gaby’s career aspirations were built on trying to help Maya, and now that wasn’t enough, she’ll be left questioning everything. The eighth episode of Shrinking season 3 will show how these characters cope with another loss and what it all means for them.
