The V/H/S series now serves as an annual Halloween special on Shudder, and there’s a good chance it could team up with another popular streaming-based horror franchise featuring found footage for a truly chilling crossover event. The V/H/S series blends the concept of found footage with a horror anthology narrative style. Each film contains several short horror movies presented as found footage, all recorded within a larger overarching storyline. Since its move to Shudder, the V/H/S series has been a significant success for the platform and remains the biggest ongoing found footage project out there.
The V/H/S franchise isn’t the only successful found-footage series on Shudder, as the ongoing Creep franchise demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach in creating jump scares. After releasing its initial two films in 2014 and 2017, Creep has continued on Shudder with the series The Creep Tapes, now moving into its second season. With Creep being just as unsettling as some of the most petrifying horror shorts from the V/H/S series, these two horror franchises sharing a home on Shudder could pave the way for an exciting crossover between the two.
Creep Would Be Perfect as a V/H/S Segment
The Creep series revolves around an unnamed serial killer, portrayed by Mark Duplass who also co-wrote and co-produced the series. This character usually entices his victims with fake job offers for a videographer position. Once they arrive, he subjected them to terrifying ordeals, driving them towards their limits before ultimately taking their lives. The entire process is recorded by the killer and/or the victim, making Creep a part of the found footage genre. This resemblance is similar to the V/H/S franchise format. A segment from Creep could seamlessly blend with the overall structure of the V/H/S anthology series, as their thematic tones appear to complement each other perfectly.
Although “Creep” doesn’t directly feature supernatural elements, the anthology format of “V/H/S” offers a convenient solution to this. A segment from “Creep” within a “V/H/S” movie could comfortably isolate Duplass’s killer without incorporating any supernatural aspects in his storyline (or even introduce some daring, horror-themed fantastical elements into the “Creep” segment). Although combining film franchises often encounters legal challenges, it would be less problematic to integrate “Creep” into the “V/H/S” franchise.
V/H/S & Creep Are Both on Shudder (Making a Crossover Much Easier To Facilitate)
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve always been intrigued by the unique journey of the V/H/S franchise. This series kick-started Bloody Disgusting’s foray into horror movie production, with the initial trio of films being distributed by Magnet Releasing. Fast forward to 2021, and V/H/S found its new home as the marquee Halloween title on Shudder, a horror streaming platform. Ever since then, it seems like the series has flourished on this platform, with Bloody Disgusting still heavily involved. Interestingly, even the Creep series has made its way to Shudder.
The first two “Creep” films, created by Blumhouse and Duplass Brother Productions, were initially distributed domestically by The Orchard, while Netflix handled international releases. In 2024, the series “The Creep Tapes” moved the franchise to Shudder. This shift could potentially pave the way for a “Creep-V/H/S” collaboration. Although contract talks between the production companies of both franchises would be necessary, their shared platform on Shudder might facilitate such discussions more easily. From a storytelling perspective, there are strong indications that a “Creep-V/H/S” crossover could live up to its expectations.
Why a Creep Tape in a V/H/S Movie Would Make for a Great Crossover
As a movie connoisseur, I must confess that the Creep franchise never fails to impress with its masterful exploration of psychological horror. The films, along with each installment of The Creep Tapes, present a unique twist as Mark Duplass’ chilling antagonist adopts diverse guises to ensnare his victims. Underneath his friendly façade, he subtly reveals his darker self, making the audience question what is truly authentic.
The werewolf-masked persona of “Peachfuzz” has undeniably become a signature element of the Creep series. It’s this very character that keeps fans on the edge of their seats and sets the stage for the franchise’s chilling atmosphere to take root.
The enigmatic serial killer portrayed by Duplass is equally as terrifying as any monster or supernatural threat from the V/H/S series, with each recorded murder gradually escalating into shockingly intense conclusions. Such elements are essential for any segment in a V/H/S film. Devising original concepts for short films to comprise a new V/H/S movie each Halloween is undeniably challenging, but blending the chilling atmosphere of the V/H/S franchise with that of the Creep series could yield one of the best crossovers in horror movie history, creating an exciting Halloween fusion of two highly acclaimed horror franchises.
V/H/S 8 and The Creep Tapes Season 2 will both arrive on Shudder this fall.
