Shudder, the popular streaming service for horror fans, will release a new slasher film in theaters. The movie will feature iconic actresses from two well-known horror series. Shudder has increasingly shown films in cinemas – notably including Skinamarink (2023), Late Night with the Devil (2024), and the upcoming Good Boy (2025), often through its partnership with Independent Film Company in the U.S.
Shudder and Independent Film Company are teaming up again to release the upcoming slasher film, River, in U.S. theaters. Currently in post-production, River marks the directorial debut of Joshua Giuliano and stars popular horror actresses Jessica Rothe and Jane Levy. Shudder will also be shopping for international distribution deals at the AFM market through Upgrade.
Jessica Rothe is most famous for playing Tree Gelbman in the Happy Death Day films, where she’s both the central character who is hunted and the one who ultimately survives. She recently appeared with Bill Skarsgård in the action-comedy Boy Kills World and was a main cast member on the Netflix series Pulse.
Jane Levy started gaining recognition in horror and thriller films when she starred as Mia in the 2013 remake of Evil Dead. She continued working within the genre, reuniting with Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez in the 2016 film Don’t Breathe, and later played Jackie Torrance in the 2018 series Castle Rock. Beyond horror, she’s also well-known for her leading role in the NBC musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
Read the official synopsis for River below:
After their father dies, three long-separated siblings return to their hometown with a mission: to scatter his ashes on a beloved river. However, their journey quickly turns dangerous when their boat malfunctions, leaving them stranded and without a way to call for help. They soon discover they’re being hunted by a mysterious killer lurking in the woods. To survive the night, the siblings must overcome years of conflict and work together to fight a terrifying and relentless enemy.
Joining the cast of River are Dane DiLiegro, known for his work in Prey, and Max Mattern, who appeared in Peacock’s Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy. This means stars Janelle Rothe and Oliver Levy aren’t the only ones with experience in thriller and horror projects. Nicholas Lazo, VP of development and production at Shudder, praised both the cast and crew as “immensely talented” and described Giuliano’s script as both “beautiful and horrifying.”
Shudder, the streaming service, hasn’t always released its exclusive films in theaters, but it’s seen increasing success with theatrical releases lately. Before 2024, their movies rarely earned over $1 million in theaters, but recent films like Good Boy ($8 million worldwide), Late Night with the Devil ($15.5 million), and In a Violent Nature ($4.6 million in 2024) have performed very well.
If Shudder makes smart choices and effectively uses the popularity of the lead actresses in their new film, River has a good chance of becoming a successful slasher movie. Their previous release, Clown in a Cornfield, based on Adam Cesare’s novel, earned $21.5 million at the box office with a budget of only $1 million, and River could follow a similar path.
