Sicily Yacht Tragedy: Autopsy Reveals Couple Drowned Together

As a heartbroken observer of this tragic event, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of sorrow for these seven souls who lost their lives so suddenly and under such bizarre circumstances. The images of that luxurious yacht, once brimming with laughter and life, now submerged in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of life can be.

New details continue to surface about the Sicily superyacht tragedy.

Approximately a week and a day after a luxury yacht capsized off the coast of an Italian city on August 19th, it was officially verified by the Italian news agency ANSA (through autopsy reports) that spouses Christopher Morvillo and Neda Morvillo perished due to drowning on September 2nd.

Christopher and Neda—who were reported missing alongside along with British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer had been missing until Aug. 22—exhibited “no signs of trauma,” ANSA reported of the autopsy conducted by Antonella Argo, and there are “no other causes linked” to their deaths.

The completed autopsies for the passengers are still pending. On September 4th, the autopsies for Jonathan and Judy will be carried out. The autopsies for Michael, his daughter, and Recaldo Thomas (found on August 20th) have not been scheduled yet.

22 individuals were onboard the 184-foot vessel named Bayesian prior to its sinking on August 19. This group consisted of 12 guests and 10 crew members. The unusual incident happened approximately at 5 a.m. local time, caused by severe weather conditions, including a waterspout, with the 3rd, the Sicily [for Salvo Coccasional language: “Salvo Cocina” of Sicily’s civil protection agency informed NBC, the incident was described as anomalous due to harsh weather conditions and a waterspout.

Cocina told reporters of the event, “They were in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The ship’s captain, James Cutfield, is currently being investigated over allegations of manslaughter. However, it’s important to note that he hasn’t been formally accused of any criminal offense as yet. The ongoing investigation doesn’t necessarily imply that charges will be filed against him.

Simultaneously, Giovanni Costantino – the founder and CEO of The Italian Sea Group, responsible for building the superyacht in 2008 – highlighted that the accident was due to a “chain of mistakes made by the crew, unending in nature.”

He stated to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on August 21, “Everything about it was foreseeable.” In an interview translated from Italian, his words were translated, he explained, this translation. “I have the weather maps right here,” he continued. “Consider: why weren’t any fishermen from Porticello at sea that night? A fisherman observes the weather and a ship doesn’t? The storm was clearly visible on all the weather maps. It would have been impossible to overlook it.”

Now, the families and friends of the seven who died are mourning the immeasurable losses.

Hannah’s older sister, Esme, who was one of the 15 survivors, stated (to Sky News), “She was my little angel, my guiding star.” She had an abundance of love to share with everyone around her, as well as a deep passion for her friends and academic pursuits.

Esme too reminisced about cherished moments shared with her sister, who was planning to start at Oxford University in autumn. She mentioned that her sister would frequently pop into her room, beaming with a smile, to spend time with her or seek her guidance.

“Regardless of circumstances, she showered me with an endless supply of love,” Esme went on. “Her care was relentless, her affection fiery, her humor inadvertently amusing, and she was simply the most extraordinary, encouraging, and jubilant sister and dearest friend I could ever ask for.”
