‘Significant’ Layoffs Are Set to Hit Amazon Game Studios

Amazon Game Studios is set to feel the effects of a company-wide round of layoffs.

Bloomberg reports that the company is making substantial job cuts in its video game division, but the exact number of people affected hasn’t been revealed.

Overall, the layoffs across the whole company will amount to an eye-watering 14,000 redundancies.

The layoffs in Amazon’s gaming division will primarily impact employees in Irvine and San Diego. The company is also scaling back development of expensive games, especially large-scale online multiplayer games like New World.

So, I just read an email from Steve Boom, who’s a big shot at Twitch – he runs their Audio, Twitch, and Games divisions. He sent this message to everyone who works there, and here’s what he had to say…

We’re proud of the successful high-quality games we’ve created and published ourselves, but we’ve made the tough decision to stop working on several of those big-budget projects, particularly massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), at Amazon Game Studios. This means we’re reducing the number of roles at our studios in Irvine and San Diego, and within our central publishing team.

Amazon Game Studios will keep working on projects like Tomb Raider, but the team size will be reduced.

The video game industry has seen a lot of layoffs over the past two years, and unfortunately, this trend continues. So far this year, companies like EA, Xbox, People Can Fly, and Bend Studio have all had to reduce their workforces, among others.
