Much of the fear in Silent Hill f stems from its setting, the town of Ebisugaoka. According to a recent GamesRadar interview, the town’s design evolved throughout development through conversations between NeoBards, Konami, and writer Ryukishi07. Director Al Yang explained that their pitch to Konami for the game needed to guarantee the story would truly feel like something created by Ryukishi07.
Lead level designer Kaiyu Chang shared how the game’s early story really connected with her. She was particularly drawn to its exploration of the limitations and expectations placed on women in society.
She first read the script several years ago and found it particularly meaningful because she was pregnant at the time. The story’s portrayal of the pressures and limitations faced by women really connected with her, and many scenes were deeply moving. Although the story went through some changes, its central theme remained the same. They primarily focused on how the story was presented, making adjustments to its delivery rather than the core narrative.
According to Yang, many locations in Silent Hill f weren’t originally planned but were chosen specifically to improve both the story and the game’s overall mood and setting. He explained that the school, for instance, was first suggested by the NeoBards team and then refined through discussions with Konami and Ryukishi07.
According to Chang, locations that later became central to the game, such as the protagonist Hinako’s house, were initially planned as atmospheric mazes. However, the house ultimately became a crucial part of Silent Hill f’s story, serving as the place where Hinako uncovers many family secrets.
We then added features like ‘memory’ and multiple storylines, and designed the game world to change based on player choices and the ending they reached. Ryukishi07 consistently created new story details and background information to fit the gameplay. After many discussions and improvements, the game you see now was finalized.
Since Silent Hill f launched in September, the people who worked on the game have shared new details through interviews. In October, voice actress Konatsu Kato discussed her experience playing Hinako, explaining that it sometimes felt like the role was affecting her own mental state. She attributed this to the game’s complex, branching storyline, which made it easy to become fully immersed in the character. Kato specifically mentioned that it felt particularly unsettling when Hinako had conversations with herself.
