The popular horror series *Silent Hill* returns with *Silent Hill F*, a new and terrifying story. Created by NeoBards Entertainment and published by Konami, this third-person action game is a separate story within the *Silent Hill* universe. Unlike many previous games, *Silent Hill F* doesn’t take place in the iconic American town the series is known for.
Set in 1960s Japan, *Silent Hill F* tells the story of high school student Shimizu Hinako and her frightening journey. The game features alternate versions of herself, ghostly figures wearing masks, and the mind-bending puzzles and psychological horror that *Silent Hill* is known for – elements fans recently experienced in the *Silent Hill 2* remake.
The new survival horror game, *Silent Hill F*, is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Critics have given it mostly positive reviews, with an 87% score on OpenCritic. This is the first *Silent Hill* game developed by NeoBards, the studio behind titles like the *Devil May Cry HD Collection*, *Marvel’s Avengers*, and *Resident Evil Re:Verse*.
Silent Hill F Story Is a Psychonautic Nightmare – Every Plot Point
The story begins with Hinako, who is living a quiet life in the small Japanese village of Ebisugaoka. She’s feeling dissatisfied with things at home, as her older sister recently left to get married, and her mother is struggling after years of hardship caused by Hinako’s father.
After a difficult fight with her family, Hinako opens up to her friends, Shu, Rinko, and Sakuko. Like many teenagers feeling lost and upset, the four friends try to escape their worries and find some relief.
This group of friends finds an escape in small red capsules offered to Hinako by Shu. These mysterious pills, intended to relieve Hinako’s headaches, become central to the unsettling story of F. Once she starts taking them, strange occurrences begin at Ebisugaoka.
When Hinako first tries the herbal remedy, a dense fog rolls into Ebisugaoka, red spider lilies bloom everywhere, and she begins to see a terrifying monster in a white wedding kimono – the main enemy she’ll face throughout the game. This fog and the flowers are reminiscent of the atmosphere in the *Silent Hill* series.
When Hinako’s friend, Sakuko, unexpectedly dies after eating new red lilies, Hinako embarks on a journey to avenge her and confront the terrifying forces that lurk throughout her rural Japanese homeland.
Hinako suddenly begins experiencing strange visions after she unexpectedly passes out. These visions take place in a location she comes to recognize as the Dark Shrine. There, she meets a mysterious man wearing a traditional Japanese fox mask, known only as Fox Mask, whose motives and true identity remain hidden.
While drifting in and out of reality, Hinako is looked after by Fox Mask, but things aren’t what they appear. Even though her new caretaker seems kind, everyone around her warns her not to trust anyone at the Dark Shrine.
Okay, so thankfully Hinako finally wakes up and manages to find Shu and Rinko again. But things are really tough – the bridges out of town are destroyed by whatever’s taken over Ebisugaoka. That means our group has to try and escape through this really narrow, hidden path up the mountainside behind Shu’s place. It’s risky, but it’s our only shot!
As Hinako travels, she drifts in and out of awareness, repeatedly experiencing visions of the Dark Shrine and the Fox Mask. During one of these visions, their relationship changes. After Hinako helps someone in this strange place, the Fox Mask asks her to kill Shu and Rinko back in the real world, believing this will help her overcome her past.
She also accepts Fox Mask’s marriage proposal, discovering he’s actually Tsuneki Kotoyuki, a friend from her childhood. They were once close, and there was even a possibility they were intended to be married when they were younger.
Fox Mask understands the significance of their bond and proposes marriage to Hinako, a request she carefully considers. As preparations begin, she undergoes three transformative rituals. First, her arm is removed and replaced with a fox’s limb. Next, bands are tightly wrapped around her back. Finally, the upper part of her face is altered, replaced by a fox mask.
As Hinako remains in the Dark Shrine, she gradually transforms into a monster, ultimately becoming the same Shiromuku monster players first encounter in the game.
I woke up back in Ebisugaoka, but something was terribly wrong. Shu and Rinko were just… gone. I have no idea where they are, and no one’s told me anything. It’s possible I hurt them somehow during one of my blackouts at the Dark Shrine, but honestly, I just don’t know. The thought is terrifying, but I can’t be sure if it’s true.
Finally, Hinako’s mom calls her in for dinner, but Fox Mask keeps pressuring her about her upcoming wedding. Meanwhile, the line between the real world and the dream world of the Dark Shrine starts to blur. Hinako has a conversation with her other self from the dream world, and shockingly, this version of Hinako says she wants to harm her loved ones and completely submit to Kotoyuki.
This occurs because Hinako, in her human form, is confused by what the masked figure wants and is trying to understand how these two different worlds might be coming together.
Okay, so things get *really* dark for Hinako at this family dinner. It’s the moment all her anxieties explode – she completely loses control and her two sides, her normal self and the masked, darker version, merge. Tragically, this leads to her killing her parents and essentially destroying her human form. It’s a horrifying scene, but it sets the stage for her to fully transform into her Shiromuku form and finally ‘marry’ Kotoyuki in that strange dream world. It’s a disturbing twist, but it explains everything that’s been building up.
The story is building to a dramatic climax at Hinako and Kotoyuki’s wedding. Our hero finally remembers who she is while trapped in the Dark Shrine world, preparing for a last showdown with the darker version of herself.
At this point, the story has five possible paths, each leading to a very different conclusion.
Every Silent Hill F Ending Explained
Coming Home To Roost Ending
If you play *Silent Hill F* for the first time, you’ll experience the “Coming Home to Roost” ending. In this outcome, Hinako overcomes her darker, Fox Mask persona, breaks off the wedding, and continues living her life.
But things aren’t as they seem. The situation appears to stem from Hinako’s struggles with substance abuse, and Shu’s pills likely triggered the current crisis.
As I watched, it became clear that Hinako’s struggles with drugs stemmed from a really difficult upbringing – specifically, being forced into an arranged marriage and the pain she experienced at home. The big reveal was shocking: she didn’t actually kill a parallel version of herself, and the wedding wasn’t some symbolic thing, it genuinely *happened*. It was a real marriage, and all the trauma was, unfortunately, very real.
Hinako experienced a psychotic break and tragically killed several people at her wedding. Now in her twenties and mentally unwell, she is a fugitive from the law.
Fox’s Wedding Ending
Unlike the ‘Coming Home to Roost’ ending, ‘The Fox’s Wedding’ sees Hinako’s fox spirit form take over, resulting in her accepting her marriage to Kotoyuki and abandoning her human life.
As this unfolds, Shu reappears and explains he gave his friend the red capsules earlier to help her regain clarity. A struggle ensues between Hinako and Shu, and ultimately, Hinako wins. She then marries Kotoyuki, sacrificing her independence and sense of self in the process.
To get this particular ending, players need to avoid picking up red capsules, either purify the Sacred Sword or don’t get it at all, and locate Agura no Hotei-Sama.
The Fox Wags Its Tail Ending
The ‘Fox Wags Its Tail’ ending is the most rebellious of the game’s different conclusions. In it, Hinako firmly rejects Fox Mask, refuses the arranged marriage, goes against her parents, and overcomes her darker self from the Dark Shrine.
Honestly, seeing Kotoyuki lose it was heartbreaking, but it was also a turning point. Thankfully, Hinako managed to overcome him in a final battle, which meant she could finally escape with Shu and start building a genuinely peaceful life. It was a relief to see them find some happiness after everything they’d been through.
To achieve the best ending in the game, known as “The Fox Wags Its Tail,” players need to avoid collecting any red capsules and instead acquire the Unpurified Sacred Sword.
Ebisugaoka in Silence Ending
The ending of “Ebisugaoka in Silence” helps Hinako find inner peace and focus on her own well-being, prioritizing her personal growth above all else.
Similar to other endings in *Silent Hill F*, the final battle doesn’t result in a clear victory for either the human characters or Hinako, who wears the Fox Mask. Instead, they reach a stalemate. The story then explains that Kotoyuki comes from a family of men drawn to women with special, almost supernatural abilities, and that Hinako herself possesses a great power.
This allows the character to integrate both sides of her personality, giving her the power to shape her own future while recognizing the worth of all her experiences, even the painful ones.
Unlocking the true ending, “Ebisugaoka in Silence,” requires a bit more effort. You’ll first need to see two other endings, then locate and purify the sacred sword. Importantly, don’t use any red capsules, and make sure to offer the Brooch to the Jizo Statue on the Ebisugaoka Mountain Path.
The Great Space Invasion! Ending
It would not be a Silent Hill game without a goofy alternate ending thrown into the mix.
Similar to the famously funny Shiba-Inu ending in *Silent Hill 2*, “The Great Space Invasion!” ending isn’t considered part of the game’s official story. It features Hinako and her friends discussing aliens and deciding that an alien abduction probably explains why Hinako feels so empty.
The game concludes with the camera lifting to show a UFO above the town, playfully referencing other humorous endings in the series – the UFO is piloted by a small dog.
I’m really excited about unlocking this! From what I understand, all it takes is finding every single UFO radio broadcast scattered throughout the game, tracking down those three hidden movie posters, and stumbling upon that special movie review collectible as I play. It sounds like a fun challenge!
