Silent Hill f Producer Reiterates That it is Not a Soulslike

In the realm of horror gaming, the resurgence of the Silent Hill series is causing a stir, with the recent remake of Silent Hill 2 last year and the upcoming release of Silent Hill f. Interestingly, the forthcoming title in this franchise is sparking discussions about its similarities to FromSoftware’s Souls series. This comparison primarily revolves around the combat style in Silent Hill f, which emphasizes slower, strategic melee actions that require careful management of stamina. However, producer Motoi Okamoto has expressed that this comparison might be somewhat misleading or unjustified.

In an interview at Gamescom 2025 with IGN, Okamoto discussed that some elements of the combat system in the Silent Hill series are actually more antiquated than the combat style introduced in the Souls series, which debuted with the 2009 game Demon’s Souls. He also mentioned that numerous other games have employed similar styles of combat, including even earlier installments within the Silent Hill franchise.

He mentioned that the term “souls” is often used loosely on the internet. He considers this term misleading because when players see elements such as a stamina meter or a dodge, they quickly categorize the game as a “souls-like.” This suggests that the game shares similarities with the popular “Souls” series. However, he believes that using the term “souls-like” can be a bit deceitful because it might create unrealistic expectations about the game’s mechanics or style based on the “Souls” series.

To set the record straight, many elements we’ve incorporated are reminiscent of earlier ‘Silent Hill’ games. For instance, the charge mechanism for attacks in our game bears a resemblance to the Focus meter in ‘Silent Hill 4’. Similarly, you’ll notice a stamina meter that’s quite similar to what was used in ‘Silent Hill 3’, although it makes an appearance later on.

Okamoto discussed how the strategic approach in close-quarters fighting isn’t unique to the Souls series; instead, it’s been employed in older action horror games for quite some time. Towards the end of the interview, he emphasized that Silent Hill f is not intended to be a Souls-like game but rather a title focused on action horror.

He pointed out that the elements in question aren’t unique to ‘souls-like’ games. Instead, they’ve been featured in action horror games for quite some time. If you incorporate these elements, you’re often categorized as a ‘souls-like.’ However, we want to make it clear that while we share the genre of an action horror game, we are not a ‘souls-like’.

The video game titled “Silent Hill f” is currently under development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with an expected release date of September 25th. Lately, the game has unveiled a trailer displaying the Otherworld settings in the upcoming title. The protagonist, Hinako Shimizu, will encounter odd monsters, eerie voices over the radio, and possibly face her own past traumas due to distorted representations of her home.

Regarding the gameplay of Silent Hill f, information about its combat mechanics was disclosed in August. This includes details on how the weapon durability system functions and how players can leverage resources discovered in the game world to repair and enhance these weapons through a crafting system. Moreover, the game will incorporate a development system that focuses on unique currency and equipment for boosting Hinako’s attributes.

Previously, Okamoto has mentioned that Silent Hill 5 would incorporate more action-oriented gameplay compared to the usual style of the series.
