The Silent Hill series is known for its terrifying events taking place in the American town of Silent Hill, but Konami and Neobards recently switched things up with Silent Hill f, setting it in a small Japanese village. Series producer Motoi Okamoto told Inverse they’re open to exploring even more unusual locations in future games, rather than returning to familiar places like Silent Hill or Ebisugaoka.
During the interview, Okamoto discussed the idea of a future Silent Hill game taking place in Central or South America. He suggested using local myths and legends to create a compelling story. He also mentioned Russia, Italy, and South Korea as possible locations for future games in the series.
Okamoto suggested exploring similar strategies with cultures worldwide. He mentioned Central and South America as potential areas to connect with local, shamanistic traditions. He also proposed looking at regions like Russia, Italy, and South Korea, recognizing their distinct belief systems. Okamoto believes this broader approach will help them develop their ideas even further.
When asked about those specific locations, Okamoto discussed the political instability they’d experienced – including military rule and coups – and suggested this history would likely inspire unique local stories and legends.
The region has experienced a history of military rule and power grabs, which has fostered a culture of boldness and strong masculinity. Alongside this, traditional beliefs and shamanistic practices also play a significant role in shaping the local culture.
He admitted that creating games based on the unique settings and folklore of these regions would be challenging. This would be particularly true if Konami decided to set future Silent Hill games in Central or South America, as those areas lack a large number of experienced game developers capable of handling such a big project.
He explained that a key challenge is the lack of major video game development studios in Central and South America equipped to work on a property like Silent Hill. While the region has a wealth of compelling stories in other media, figuring out how to adapt those into successful games is still something they’re considering.
Konami is making a big return to the horror genre with the release of Silent Hill f this year and the Silent Hill 2 remake, developed by Bloober Team, in 2024. Back in 2022, the company announced three games – Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, and Silent Hill: Townfall – to demonstrate their renewed dedication to the Silent Hill series.
