Rebecca Ferguson will once again play a central role as Juliette in the third season of Silo, continuing her strong performance from the first two seasons. However, the show already took a significant departure from the source material when Juliette returned in season two, altering the original storyline.
The Apple TV series Silo hasn’t been afraid to make significant changes from the original novels by Hugh Howey, altering everything from the overall mood to the way key characters behave. The show’s second season even introduced new characters to expand on the story’s existing background. While still capturing the heart of the books, the Silo TV adaptation has successfully created its own unique identity, rather than simply being a direct translation of the source material.
As a big fan, I’ve really enjoyed how the show has handled things for the first couple of seasons. Season 2 felt a little rushed at times, but it ended strong and redeemed itself. But going into Season 3, it looks like the show is going to start diverging pretty significantly from the source material, especially with how they’re bringing Juliette back into the story. It’s a little concerning, honestly, as I really loved the books!
Silo Season 3 Will Not Take The Same Approach As Hugh Howey’s Second Novel
The ending of Silo season 2 follows the plot of the first book, Wool, in Hugh Howey’s series. This means season 3 will likely draw from the second novel, Shift. However, while the Apple TV show will incorporate elements from Shift, it won’t be a straightforward adaptation. The book Shift functions more as a backstory, diving into the history and beginnings of the silo itself.
Because the book is set long before the events of the current series, it introduces an entirely new cast of characters. Juliette doesn’t appear until the very end, when the story jumps back to the present day. Rebecca Ferguson’s return for season 3 of Silo confirms that, unlike the book Shift, the show won’t be mainly focused on the past.
The story will probably jump between past and present timelines, showing how the history of the silos relates to current events in Silo 18.
The second season of Silo suggests that Camille, Sims’ wife, will have a significant role in season 3. The season finale implies she’ll become Juliette’s main political opponent within Silo 18. This storyline is new to the TV series, as Camille doesn’t appear in the original Silo books.
In season 3, Silo seems to be prioritizing the character Camille and establishing her as a primary antagonist for Juliette, which will likely cause the show to diverge more from the original books. While the season will probably still cover the key historical events from Hugh Howey’s Shift, it will do so alongside Juliette’s current efforts to protect the people of Silo 18.
Silo Season 3’s Book Changes Will Benefit The Series
Adapting a book for television is often difficult, and fans don’t always embrace the changes. With Silo, it wouldn’t have worked to abandon the show’s current story in season 3 and only explore the past. Viewers who’ve been watching since the beginning are invested in the characters and expect to follow Juliette’s journey as the main character.
Introducing a completely new group of characters while sidelining familiar faces like Juliette for most of a season could have turned viewers away from Silo.
I understand why the show isn’t following the books exactly – it’s a different medium, and they’re clearly trying something new with the storytelling. The longer format of a TV series gives them room to add their own ideas and storylines, which is great. Honestly, I think season two of Silo struggled a bit because Juliette’s story felt stuck for so long before things finally picked up at the end.
The next seasons of Silo should move at a better pace. The show has a lot of story material from the books to work with, and the groundwork laid in earlier episodes will help. Hopefully, viewers will enjoy what’s coming next on Apple TV+.
