Fans are understandably getting impatient waiting for season 3 of Silo, especially after the second season ended without a clear release date. However, the wait should be worthwhile, as the new season will incorporate a positive change from the original book.
Right from the start, the TV series Silo has made significant changes to the original novels by Hugh Howey. It’s added new characters and given more important roles to characters who weren’t central in the books. The show also introduced entirely new ideas, like “the Syndrome” and the “Flamekeepers,” to deepen the story and add more mystery.
The most significant change from the books is still ahead in season 3 of the Apple TV sci-fi series, and it will actually improve the show in multiple ways.
Silo Season 3 Will Significantly Change The Hugh Howey Books In 1 Good Way
The ending of Silo season 2 closely follows the plot of the first book, Wool, which is part of the original trilogy by Hugh Howey. Because of this, it’s likely that seasons 3 and 4 will cover the remaining two books, Shift and Dust. Readers of the books will remember that Shift tells the backstory of the silo and how it came to be, functioning almost as a prequel.
As a big fan of the Silo series, I found it interesting that Shift is set way before the events of Wool. Because of this, you don’t see many of the characters from Silo 18 until much later – and even Juliette doesn’t really show up until the very end, when the story finally catches up to the timeline we know from the first book.
If the third season of Silo strictly followed the books, Juliette wouldn’t appear much at all. However, the show is doing something different: it won’t spend a whole season just exploring the past. Instead, it will weave between past events and current storylines, revealing information from both timelines.
Changes to established storylines are usually unwelcome, and often seem pointless. But this particular change is beneficial because it reveals important details about the show’s mysterious setting without overshadowing the characters viewers have come to love. It allows the Apple TV sci-fi series to explore its history and purpose while still keeping the focus on what makes it so engaging.
Silo’s Book Change Will Ensure Season 3’s Long Wait Is Worth It
Many viewers would have been surprised and possibly disappointed if season 3 of Silo had drastically changed direction. If the show had closely followed the books but started fresh with entirely new characters, ignoring those we’d grown to know from the first two seasons, it would have felt like a completely different series. After investing time in Juliette and the residents of Silos 18 and 17, a sudden shift like that would have been confusing and jarring.
The show can stay consistent and build on its overall story by continuing to feature its main characters.
By sticking closely to the original Silo books, the show maintains its current story flow and avoids losing the connection with the characters and conflicts viewers already care about.
