Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe means instant media attention, and Simu Liu, who recently became part of the cast, is talking about the public relations training he received – and some past mishaps. Liu became a household name a few years ago when he played Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a key film in the fourth phase of the MCU.
In recent years, Simu Liu became widely known for his role as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster film, Barbie. He was particularly popular among the many actors who played Ken, second only to Ryan Gosling. This year, he also appeared in the popular animated Netflix series, In Your Dreams, and has recently been in Arthur the King, Invincible, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, and Star Wars: Visions.
With the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, Simu Liu is currently starring in the new sci-fi thriller series The Copenhagen Test. This marks Liu’s first time returning as Shang-Chi in a live-action role since 2021, and he’ll be appearing in Doomsday later this year. While promoting The Copenhagen Test, Liu spoke with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe years ago.
Crowley playfully asked Simu Liu if his experience with Marvel’s public relations training prepared him for playing an intelligence officer, joking that they were always careful about what they said when discussing Marvel projects. Liu confirmed the training was real, recalling a full day dedicated to it and finding the connection amusing.
According to Liu, he’s not sure if he’s gained anything from his experiences because he repeatedly finds himself in hot water with Marvel, a studio known for being very secretive about its projects. You can read his complete statement below.
Honestly, I’m not sure if any of that advice actually helped me, since I kept finding myself in difficult situations. Everyone always says, “Stay silent, and they can’t use your words against you.” But I ended up talking way too much for the next four years! In theory, though, I’d say yes, it makes sense. I recall learning some general tips about redirecting questions back to the interviewer and controlling the conversation, but I haven’t really been able to put those into practice.
Unlike Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland, who have a reputation for accidentally revealing spoilers, Simu Liu hasn’t shared any significant plot points in interviews. Both Ruffalo (as Bruce Banner/Hulk) and Holland (as Peter Parker/Spider-Man) will be back for the new movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which comes out this July.
The new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is set to come out on December 18, 2026. The film will feature a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, and many others. Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously directed several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, are also directing this movie.
Simu Liu and his fellow actors will face lots of questions about the Marvel Cinematic Universe before the details of Avengers: Doomsday are revealed, and not everyone remembers what they’re supposed to say! While fans wait for the new movie, they can check out Liu’s new show, The Copenhagen Test, where he plays a spy who shares some similarities with his Marvel character.
