2025’s blockbuster movie “Sinners” by Ryan Coogler has reignited cinema enthusiasts’ enthusiasm for unique, high-quality productions. The cinematic journey of watching “Sinners” was on par with the most acclaimed luxury releases (in IMAX and 70mm format), blending classic crime-horror genre elements with deep cultural mythology. Intriguingly, the universe and lore that Coogler crafted for “Sinners” were so intricate that the surprising twist at the end of the movie left many viewers questioning a possible sequel. With its ability to traverse various time periods within a larger narrative about the potent influences of music, ambition, and human relationships, it seems like “Sinners” has all the makings to expand into a whole cinematic universe.
Is there any news about the sequel to “Sinners“, or is Ryan Coogler considering alternative ways to expand this universe further?
Is Sinners Getting A Sequel?
If you were anticipating a sequel for the movie “Sinners”, it’s probably best to adjust your expectations. As clearly expressed by writer and director Ryan Coogler, “Sinners” was never intended to establish a franchise universe. After completing work on two Marvel’s “Black Panther” films, Coogler deliberately chose his next project to be an original intellectual property, designed as a unique, standalone experience.
For some time now, I’ve been immersed in the world of franchise films. This year, when I spoke with Ebony Magazine, I shared that I sought a change from that. What I yearned for was the opportunity to work on a project that felt genuinely mine, something fresh and personal. I craved the chance to present something to viewers that was original and unlike anything they’d seen before.
Coogler, the director of Sinners, demonstrated an impressive ability to create a unique cinematic experience and attract audiences with his vision, particularly with the help of Michael B. Jordan’s star power. Despite earning $365 million worldwide against a potentially high production budget, the profit margin was still relatively low, leading Warner Bros. Pictures to consider Sinners as a one-time investment. However, if Coogler proposes another original project, the strong streaming performance of Sinners on HBO Max could encourage the studio to greenlight it. Regarding a potential sequel for Sinners, it’s unlikely at this time.
Sinners Could Continue As A Prequel or Spinoff
Currently, there exist numerous methods for expanding an initial Intellectual Property (IP) into a more extensive Franchise IP, all while preserving the value of the original work. In the scenario of Sinners, the possibilities for such expansion are particularly promising due to its abundant potential.
A proposal that’s been floated online is a prequel or spinoff movie titled “Sinners.” This project would shift the storyline into the crime-thriller genre, with the focus on the Smokestack Twins (portrayed by Michael B. Jordan) as they arrive in Chicago and establish themselves amidst the ongoing mob conflicts there. A comparable approach was taken by filmmaker Zack Snyder, who released “Army of Thieves,” a heist-centered prequel/spinoff to his 2021 zombie apocalypse film “Army of the Dead,” also in the same year. However, it’s clear that a greater number of cinema-goers are eagerly anticipating the Smokestack Twins’ story compared to any return to the world of “Army of the Dead.” Therefore, this is definitely a viable option for Coogler and his team to explore.
Michael B. Jordan has expressed his readiness to reprise his dual role as Smoke and Stack in a prequel set in the gangland. In an interview with Total Film, he stated, “I’d be open to it.” However, he didn’t suggest that director Ryan Coogler would definitely do it; instead, Jordan simply indicated his own willingness for such a project. He essentially left the final decision up to Coogler, saying, “He’s the one who calls the shots.
The idea you proposed appears more captivating than any concept for a sequel focusing on Stack and his partner Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) becoming vampires over the years. Moreover, I believe that a crime drama set in different periods, involving themes of race, avarice, brutality, a hint of supernatural elements, corruption in law enforcement and politics, would perfectly suit Ryan Coogler’s skillset, creating a unique blend that resonates with our current times.
Other enthusiasts have proposed various creative spin-offs, such as a prequel delving into how Remmick transformed into a vampire, a movie focusing on the Choctaw Tribe and their struggles against vampires, or an indirect spin-off tracing the mystical roots of Annie’s ancestors. Bolder suggestions involve a contemporary spin-off linked to the original through the now legendary musical sequence.
The film titled “Sinners” features Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo. You can stream it now on HBO Max, and starting from July 8th, you will be able to purchase or rent it in digital, 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD formats.
