2025’s blockbuster movie by Ryan Coogler, titled “Sinners“, has reignited the enthusiasm among cinema-goers for unique cinematic productions. Watching Sinners was comparable to watching some of the most acclaimed high-end releases (in IMAX and 70mm format). The blend of crime-horror genre tropes with deep cultural folklore in this film was captivating, leaving many viewers questioning about a sequel after the surprising twist in the post-credits scene. With its ability to traverse various time periods within a broader narrative about music’s influence, ambition, and human relationships, Sinners seems poised to expand into an entire cinematic universe.
It seems there’s more to come. Is it possible that Coogler is developing “Sinners 2,” or does he have alternative ideas on how this universe might progress further?
Is Sinners Getting A Sequel?
If you’ve been expecting a sequel for the movie ‘Sinners’, it might be best to let go of that assumption. Director Ryan Coogler himself has clarified that he never planned for ‘Sinners’ to become a franchise, quite the opposite in fact. After working on two Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ films, Coogler intentionally chose his next project to be an original intellectual property, designed to offer a unique, standalone experience.
In a conversation with Ebony Magazine recently, Coogler shared that he’s been focusing on franchise films for some time, but now desires a change. He yearned for the opportunity to work on a film that felt authentic and personal to him, and one that would offer something fresh and distinctive to viewers.
The determination shown by the director in bringing his unique cinematic concept to life and making it successful, as evidenced by the film’s $365 million earnings worldwide against a potential budget of up to $100M, highlights Coogler’s talent and ability to captivate audiences. However, the relatively low profit margin has led Warner Bros. Pictures to consider Sinners as a single investment rather than a franchise. Nevertheless, the movie’s popularity on HBO Max streaming could potentially pave the way for the studio to approve Coogler’s future original ideas. As of now, it seems unlikely that there will be a sequel to Sinners.
Sinners Could Continue As A Prequel or Spinoff
Currently, multiple methods exist for expanding an initial intellectual property (IP) into a successful franchise IP, all while preserving the original’s value. For instance, the series Sinners offers a wealth of possibilities for such expansion.
A proposal floating around online is for a crime-thriller prequel or spinoff film titled “Sinners“. This project would delve deeper into the world of the Smokestack Twins, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, as they venture into Chicago and establish themselves amidst the city’s ongoing mob conflicts. In a similar vein, filmmaker Zack Snyder released a heist-focused prequel/spinoff titled “Army of Thieves” following his 2021 zombie apocalypse film “Army of the Dead“. Given the existing interest in the Smokestack Twins’ story, it seems this project could potentially attract more viewers than a return to the world of “Army of the Dead“, making it an intriguing prospect for Ryan Coogler and his team.
Michael B. Jordan has made clear that he’s open to reprising his dual role as Smoke and Stack in a prequel set in the gangland world. When asked by Total Film about this possibility, Jordan expressed readiness, saying, “I would be up for it.” Although he didn’t speak directly about director Ryan Coogler’s intentions, Jordan implied that if given the chance, he’d be ready to take on the roles again, leaving the final decision in Coogler’s hands.
The proposed concept appears more captivating than any subsequent storyline focusing on Stack and Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) as vampires traversing the centuries. Additionally, a crime drama set in a particular era, combining themes of race, corruption, brutality, a hint of supernatural elements, and the twisted realms of power structures like law enforcement and politics, seems tailor-made for Ryan Coogler’s next project.
Other supporters have proposed less traditional spin-off ideas, such as a prequel delving into Remmick’s (Jack O’Connell) transformation into a vampire or an indirect spin-off tracing the magical lineage of Annie’s (Wunmi Mosaku) forebears. Bolder suggestions include a contemporary spin-off linked to the original via its famous musical sequence.
The movie titled “Sinners” features Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo. As of now, it can be streamed on HBO Max. It will also become available for digital purchase, 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD formats starting July 8th.
