Director Ryan Coogler is developing a new television series based on the bestselling Animorphs books for Disney+.
The director of the recent Oscar-winning film, Sinners, will oversee a new series as an executive producer. Writer Bayan Wolcott is confirmed to write the project, according to Variety.
Animorphs, based on the popular books by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant, is about a group of teens who learn about a secret alien invasion. They gain the power to transform into animals and use this ability to defend the planet. The story combines exciting science fiction action with the relatable struggles of growing up, as the characters try to navigate high school while secretly fighting a war to save Earth.
Originally released in 1996, this popular series quickly became a worldwide success, with 54 books and over 35 million copies sold.
This isn’t the first attempt to bring the series to television. A live-action version of Animorphs was previously shown on Nickelodeon from 1998 to 2000. Though it only lasted two seasons, it later became popular with book fans.
