Sinners Editor Michael P. Shawver Doubles Down on Sequel Ideas

Despite being one of the most acclaimed films of 2025, a sequel isn’t currently in the works. However, editor Michael P. Shawver has been exploring ideas for a continuation of Ryan Coogler’s critically praised historical horror movie.

When asked about potential follow-ups to Sinners, Shawver suggested exploring different time periods. He noted that the show’s blend of vampires, blues music, and other elements, along with its depiction of the historical economic context, could be expanded upon in future installments, revealing details that viewers might not have known about the era.

Shawver explained that the story explores the experiences of people after slavery, leading up to the present day, and how events in different eras would impact them. He specifically mentioned the 1920s, referencing the setting of ‘Smoke and Stack’ in Chicago, as a potential historical focus. He expressed confidence in director Ryan Coogler’s ability to portray these experiences with depth and authenticity, highlighting the dedication of the entire cast and crew to creating a realistic and impactful film.

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which hit theaters in April 2025, really grabbed audiences from the start. I was immediately drawn into the story of Elijah “Smoke” and Elias “Stack” Moore, identical twin brothers and World War I vets. The film takes us back to 1932 Mississippi, where these two return home and decide to open a juke joint, setting the stage for what promises to be a compelling drama.

The local juke joint serves as a community hub, but it soon draws unwanted attention from a gang of vampires, led by the ruthless Remick. Before long, Smoke and Stack are fighting for their lives against not only the vampires, but also against supernatural forces from beyond the realm of the living.

The cast of Sinners includes Jordan and O’Connell, along with Miles Caton as Sammie, Smoke’s cousin, and Wunmi Mosaku as Smoke’s former wife, who is also a Hoodoo priestess. The series also features guest appearances by Lola Kirke, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, Li Jun Li, Saul Williams, Nathaniel Arcand, Peter Dreimanis, and Delroy Lindo.

The movie Sinners was a big hit with audiences and critics, earning over $368 million worldwide on a $100 million budget. It received excellent reviews and has been nominated for several major awards, and is expected to receive multiple nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards.

What Comes Next for Sinners Creator Ryan Coogler?

Fans are eagerly anticipating director Ryan Coogler’s work on a highly anticipated project. Coogler recently shared his enthusiasm, saying he’s been excited about it for a long time and is eager to begin. He also hinted that some installments, if done well, will be genuinely frightening.

She hinted at a possible return to the X-Files franchise, saying she might reprise her role as Scully in the future if Ryan Coogler were to successfully reboot the series and ask her to join the project. She estimated this could happen ‘in a few years’.

Sinners is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
