The planned revival of Blade within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring Mahershala Ali as the new Daywalker, has been stuck in a prolonged state of uncertainty for years. Each piece of news regarding the movie seems to indicate that it may have been abandoned, and a recent link to Ryan Coogler’s successful film Sinners only adds to the pessimism surrounding Blade. As gloomy signs loom overhead, the most recent developments have left Marvel enthusiasts disheartened at the possibility that we won’t witness Ali’s portrayal of Blade on screen.
Discussing with ScreenCrush, Sinners producer Sev Ohanian shared an entertaining Marvel reference, mentioning that Marvel Studios had passed on all the costumes initially designed for the Blade reboot to the Sinners team. Ohanian, who’s also an executive producer for the latest MCU Disney+ series Ironheart, explained that some of the costumes sported by background actors in Coogler’s vampire-themed Southern Gothic film originated from the Blade project.
Speaking about costume designer Ruth Carter, Ohanian mentioned that she had been working on a “Blade” film which didn’t end up getting made yet but might still be produced. He wasn’t sure about the production schedules for this project. However, at one point, this movie was set to explore the past, similar to “Sinners”. Interestingly, Carter had a warehouse filled with period-suitable costumes, and when they suddenly needed to shoot the film immediately, Marvel graciously allowed them to purchase it at an affordable price. Many of the background actors in their movie are wearing those clothes, so Ohanian extended his appreciation to Marvel for making this happen.
The original revival of “Blade” was supposedly set in the 1920s, and Oscar-winning costume designer from “Black Panther” and “Wakanda Forever”, named Carter, was connected to the film. As Carter was preparing “Blade” for Marvel, it was a story set in the 1920s. However, when the project stalled, Carter eventually got involved with “Sinners,” as approached by the Cooglers later on.
Carter shared, “For some time now, I’ve been immersed in research for a period drama centered around a vampire – specifically, the story of Blade. One day, Ryan’s wife, Zinzi (who was also a producer on Sinners) called me and said, ‘Ryan has a tale to share with you about… It’s another period piece concerning vampires.’ Given that I had been deeply involved in the preparation for Blade, which unfortunately wasn’t moving forward, I decided to listen.
She went on to express her surprise, saying, “I find it hard to imagine he’d be involved in both a historical film and a vampire movie.” If asked about the potential follow-up project to Black Panther [Wakanda Forever], I wouldn’t have predicted he’d venture into that genre.
It’s no surprise that the latest news about Blade has ignited discussions on social media centered around whether or not the film will actually be made. Currently, the hottest topic on the Marvel Cinematic Universe subreddit revolves around this exact possibility. As always, the question of why it’s so challenging to produce a Blade movie is dominating the conversation.
Last month, during the premiere of Jurassic World Rebirth, Ali was questioned about the upcoming Blade reboot and confirmed he’s still eager to play the famous character. “Give Marvel a call,” Ali said to Variety. “I’m ready. Make sure they know I’m ready.” Previously, Ali had shown up at Marvel Studios’ 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel to announce the project with Kevin Feige. However, it seems this project has been temporarily put on hold for the past six years.
In April, Delroy Lindo, who played a lead role in the series “Sinners”, announced he was no longer associated with the upcoming “Blade” project. He explained, “When Marvel approached me, they appeared genuinely interested in my ideas. During discussions with producers, writers, and directors at that time, it seemed like we were heading towards a very inclusive approach. It was an exciting concept and also intriguing for the character development. However, for some reason, everything just started to derail.
Starting this coming Friday, July 4th, you can stream “Sinners” on HBO Max. Meanwhile, the original “Blade” trilogy featuring Wesley Snipes is now up for rental or purchase on Amazon Prime Video.
