Sinners: Streaming Hit in 1 Day, But Can It Top 2025’s Biggest Film?

2025 saw the initial release of this movie in cinemas, where it garnered both critical acclaim and a strong box office response. Given its initial success, it’s only natural to expect that the enduring appeal of this vampire film will persist on online streaming platforms as well.

Warner Bros. Pictures released the movie “Sinners”, which made its debut on their streaming platform, Max (later known as HBO Max), on July 4th. The film quickly caught the attention of Max subscribers and swiftly became a massive success. According to reports, “Sinners” entered the Top 10 charts at the second spot, but it failed to knock out the highest-grossing movie of 2025, which remains unbeaten.

It appears that the reign of “A Minecraft Movie” at the box office might be coming to an end shortly, but the box office data from all regions hasn’t been collected yet. Interestingly, on its opening day, a vampire horror film took the top spot in charts across 28 countries, including Australia, Asia, and Europe. This is certainly a good sign for the movie’s future success. However, while “Sinners” is expected to claim the No.1 spot tomorrow, “A Minecraft Movie” remains in first place in 21 countries on Max, and it holds second position in most of the remaining territories.

The movie “Sinners” narrates the tale of two reformed-but-notorious twin siblings who attempt to rebuild their lives in their old town, only to uncover an ominous, otherworldly menace lurking there. This film is the work of Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed director behind “Black Panther,” who served as producer, screenwriter, and director for this project. The star-studded cast includes Michael B. Jordan portraying both brothers, alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

The movie titled “Sinners” was an overwhelming success, both critically and financially. It earned nearly perfect ratings from critics and viewers, with a 97% and 96% approval rating respectively, in addition to the prestigious Rotten Tomatoes badges Certified Fresh and Verified Hot. During its cinematic release, this vampire saga proved equally impressive. The film was made on a budget of $90 million and went on to gross an astounding $364.6 million worldwide, with the lion’s share coming from domestic box office sales.

Ryan Coogler’s movie outperformed “A Minecraft Movie” in terms of critical reception. Unfortunately, the critics gave “A Minecraft Movie” a less-than-favorable score of 48%, but audiences seemed to enjoy it more with an approval rating of 85%. Despite the mixed reviews, the film was incredibly successful and earned $953.1 million globally, ultimately becoming a box office sensation.

Will There Be Another Sinners Movie?

Despite collaborating on films like “Black Panther” and the “Creed” series, it seems unlikely that Ryan Coogler and Jordan will continue with “Sinners.” Although the movie’s success might make one think Warner Bros. would want to capitalize on its momentum, the director clarified that he created the original film as a standalone piece, not intending for there to be any sequels.

When asked if I’ve been focusing on franchise films recently, Coogler stated, ‘I prefer to explore new creative territories.’ He shared his excitement about working on a project that felt authentic and personally meaningful to him, aiming to offer something fresh and distinctly original to the audience.

He stated, “This movie really resonates with me. I’m deeply drawn to it. It feels personal. I’m all in. I appreciate stories that revolve around communities, neighborhoods, and character types. Additionally, I have a soft spot for period pieces. When you combine these elements, it strikes a chord with me.

Sinners is streaming on Max.
