Be warned, the following contains spoilers for the movie Sisu: Road to Revenge. Director Jalmari Helander has discussed the possibility of a third film following the impactful ending of Sisu: Road to Revenge. The movie centers on Aatami Korpi (played by Jorma Tommila), a former commando who attempts to rebuild his family home but is relentlessly pursued by Igor Draganov (Stephen Lang), a Soviet officer who murdered his family.
At the end of Sisu: Road to Revenge, Aatami finally defeats Igor, fulfilling his quest for revenge for his family’s murder. The film concludes with Aatami beginning to rebuild his home, with help from the people in his community.
During a conversation with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant, Helander was asked if the story of Aatami was finished or if he planned to make more films about Aatami fighting the Red Army. Helander feels that Road of Revenge provides a good and “beautiful” ending for Aatami’s story, but he’s open to making a third film if he comes up with a compelling idea. You can read his full thoughts below.
I believe this is a fitting conclusion to Aatami Korpi’s story, though I’m not ruling out the possibility of a sequel someday. We’ll see what the future holds.
Reviews for Sisu: Road to Revenge have been overwhelmingly positive, earning it a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Gregory Nussen of ScreenRant highlighted the film’s exciting action, noting that the director skillfully stages brutal fight scenes. He also praised the final act as one of the most thrilling and suspenseful in the genre.
The new sequel is proving popular with viewers, earning an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. These scores are similar to the first Sisu film from 2022, which received a 94% approval rating from critics and an 88% audience score.
The Sisu films have drawn comparisons to the John Wick franchise, which now includes five movies thanks to the recent addition of Ballerina starring Ana de Armas. Although Aatami’s story feels finished, much like John Wick, the series could continue given the very positive reaction from audiences.
Helander isn’t planning a sequel unless there’s a strong story reason. Aatami has finished his journey for now – he’s defeated Igor and is happily rebuilding his life. For him to return to the intense, violent action of Sisu, there would need to be a really compelling reason to disrupt his newfound peace.
After appearing in the recently released film Sisu: Road to Revenge, actor Lang will be back in another action-packed sequel. He’s reprising his role as Miles Quaritch – this time as a Na’vi – in Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third movie in James Cameron’s popular Avatar series. It’s scheduled to hit theaters on December 19th.
