‘Sisu: Road to Revenge’ Gets Better Rotten Tomatoes Reviews Than ‘Sisu;’ Called ‘Mad Max’ Meets MCU Explosions

The 2022 action film Sisu was a major surprise hit, and its recently released sequel is already exceeding expectations, earning even better reviews from both critics and viewers, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

With so many action movies feeling the same these days, Sisu stood out as a thrilling war and revenge story, putting an elderly man in a remarkably intense fight for survival. Both viewers and critics loved it, and it’s still popular on streaming platforms years later. Now, the sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge, is in theaters and is even better than the original – surpassing all expectations.

Movieweb’s own Zachary Lee calls the sequel a “bonkers, bloodsoaked sequel fans have been waiting for,” and that seems to be a good summation of the film that has somehow managed to live up to the hype of the first movie. The synopsis of Sisu: Road to Revenge reads:

Sisu: Road to Revenge is a non-stop action movie and a follow-up to the surprise hit, Sisu. The story follows the man who won’t die (Jorma Tommila) as he returns to the site where his family was tragically killed. He tears down the house, intending to rebuild it elsewhere as a memorial. But when the ruthless commander (Stephen Lang, known from Don’t Breathe) who murdered his family returns to finish the job, a brutal and visually stunning chase across the country begins – a desperate fight for survival packed with inventive and over-the-top action.

The ‘Sisu’ Franchise is Elevated Action to Challenge Reality

Many films ask viewers to ignore reality and accept unbelievable events, but Sisu: Road to Revenge takes things to a whole new level. Compared to it, the violent action in George Miller’s Mad Max films seems tame.

The new sequel is receiving excellent reviews, with a 95% rating on the Tomatometer and a 90% audience score on the Popcornmeter – both improvements over the first film, Sisu. Amy Nicholson of the Los Angeles Times calls it “the action spectacular of the year,” comparing it to an indie version of Mad Max: Fury Road. Peter Gray from The AU Review describes the film as a “glorious celebration of the revenge genre.”

Viewers have reacted enthusiastically, describing the sequel as a thrilling blend of the first film’s intensity with elements of Sisu, Mad Max, Quentin Tarantino’s style, and the explosive action of Marvel movies. Some reviewers even compared it to the over-the-top nature of the Fast & Furious series’ space scenes, but in a way they found delightfully enjoyable and absurd.

You can now watch Sisu for free on Tubi, and it’s a great idea to do so before the sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge, hits theaters – it’s going to be wild! We don’t have a release date for the sequel yet, but we’ll share it as soon as we know.
