For decades, audiences have loved action heroes who seem impossible to defeat, and this trope arguably peaked with the 2022 film Sisu – a story about unrelenting rage in the face of utter despair. The first film featured Aatami (Jorma Tommila), a hardened World War II veteran who single-handedly fought off countless Nazis, no matter how injured or outnumbered he was. He simply overcame every challenge. Now, that tradition continues in this new installment, but this time it’s Russian soldiers who face his wrath on his path to revenge.
The story begins in 1946 with Aatami returning to his home near the Finnish-Soviet border, only to discover his wife and child have been brutally murdered by a deranged Soviet soldier named Igor Draganov (Stephen Lang). Draganov killed them, and many others, with a shovel to conserve ammunition. Fueled by grief and rage, Aatami then single-handedly killed 300 Russian soldiers in revenge. Now, Draganov is imprisoned, but offered a chance at freedom if he can eliminate Aatami.
Daving took apart his cabin and loaded everything onto his truck. Filled with anger, Aatami and his dog set off to find a new home – it’s like a post-war version of Prince Andrew and Fergie leaving Windsor Castle. What happens next is similar to the movie Mad Max: Fury Road, but even more violent, with Aatami battling bikers, planes, and experiencing a horrific fight on a train.
Similar to the original, Sisu: Road to Revenge is divided into sections (Home, Old Enemies, Motor Mayhem, Incoming, Long Shot, and Revenge). Despite enduring a lot of damage – Aatami is covered in scars – he remains a man of few words, letting his incredibly violent actions speak for themselves. The action sequences are wildly over-the-top, making Sisu: Road to Revenge a delightfully insane and potentially the most fun action movie of the year. We definitely want to see more!
