Sisu: Road to Revenge WWII Movie Sequel Dominates PVOD Streaming Charts

Lots of war-themed movies and shows come out each year, but few have achieved the same level of success as this particular franchise, which is now popular on streaming platforms.

The historical war series began in 2022 and was immediately praised by critics. Its follow-up, Sisu: Road to Revenge, released three years later, also received very positive reviews. Just a month after hitting cinemas, Sisu: Road to Revenge became popular on streaming platforms, according to FlixPatrol.

The film Sisu: Road to Revenge quickly gained popularity, entering the top 10 on Apple TV’s rental charts in the U.S. on December 17th. It climbed as high as number 6 on December 18th and 20th, and remained a top performer until December 22nd. The movie also briefly appeared on the rental charts in Canada.

So, the new sequel just dropped, and right now you can only rent or buy it digitally. But the first Sisu movie from 2022 is still doing really well across a bunch of platforms. I was checking the numbers, and it was absolutely crushing it on Prime Video in Thailand! Plus, it had a pretty strong debut on Apple TV’s pay-per-view service – it landed at number three in Oman and tenth in Sri Lanka on December 22nd. It’s cool to see it finding an audience all over the world.

This week, the show also became available on Starz in countries across Africa, including Egypt and Algeria, and in parts of Asia.

is a World War II movie written and directed by Jalmari Helander. It features Jorma Tommila as the lead, with supporting roles played by Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, and Onni Tommila.

Sisu takes place during the Lapland War, a conflict between Finland and Nazi Germany in the final stages of World War II. The story centers on a former Finnish Army commando who’s now a gold prospector, and his desperate fight for survival when a ruthless Waffen-SS platoon, led by a cruel and dishonest officer, tries to steal his gold and kill him.

The movie first showed at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and was released in the U.S. on April 28, 2023. Critics loved it, giving it a 94% ‘Fresh’ rating based on 184 reviews, and audiences were equally impressed with an 88% approval score. Made with a budget of around €6 million (about $7 million), the film ultimately earned $14.3 million.

Reviewers described the film as having a simple story but being incredibly violent, and they noted it would strongly appeal to fans of action movies.

Viewers have been intensely discussing the film’s extreme violence, with many comparing it to ‘John Wick’ but with Nazis as the villains, suggesting it delivers exactly the kind of brutal action some audiences crave.

Sisu: Road to Revenge Was an Equally Successful Historical War Film

A sequel to the popular 2022 film Sisu: Road to Revenge is in the works, currently known as Sisu 2. Jorma Tommila will reprise his role as Aatami Korpi, and he’ll be joined by new cast members Richard Brake and Stephen Lang.

A man, known for his resilience, returns to the house where his family was tragically killed during wartime. He takes the house apart piece by piece, loads it onto a truck, and plans to rebuild it in a safer location as a tribute to their memory.

The story follows a desperate, high-speed chase across the country. A man is hunted by a ruthless Red Army commander who murdered his family and is determined to complete the job, leading to a dangerous and incredibly inventive battle for survival.

As a big action movie fan, I was really happy to see the sequel delivered just as much as the first! It scored a fantastic 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned that ‘Certified Fresh’ badge, which always gets me excited. But it wasn’t just critics who loved it – audiences gave it an 88% approval rating, and everyone kept saying how incredibly fun and action-packed it was. Seriously, it’s a wild ride!
