The anime Jujutsu Kaisen hinted at its intense Culling Game arc almost six years ago, and this month’s third season is finally bringing it to life. Following the devastating events of the Shibuya Incident, sorcerers are now struggling to survive a brutal death game masterminded by Kenjaku. As the story ramps up, fans are eagerly anticipating some of the series’ most exciting battles. Because it’s the longest story arc, the Culling Game will be adapted in two parts.
The anime is gearing up for a deadly battle between sorcerers immediately following the conclusion of the Perfect Preparation Arc in Season 3, Episode 4. Though details about what happens next are still unknown, the upcoming conflict, known as the Culling Game, has been in the works for six years. Interestingly, the anime’s very first opening hinted at this major event long before it began in the manga, foreshadowing the chaos to come.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s First Opening Hints At The Culling Game

The ‘Culling Game’ storyline began with chapter 159, released in September 2021. The anime adaptation premiered in October 2020, with its opening scene showing Yuji on a train submerged in water, a fish swimming nearby. According to a well-known Jujutsu Kaisen account and official translator (@lightningclare on X), the Japanese term for the Culling Game, ‘Annihilation Migration,’ refers to a dangerous situation where fish are swept into harsh environments and often perish. This entire game was planned solely by Kenjaku, and while no one wanted to participate, the players were forced to fight and kill each other to survive.
The game wasn’t just for Kenjaku’s entertainment; it also brought him closer to achieving his aims. Interestingly, the emperor angelfish shown at the beginning eats jellyfish, a creature linked to Junpei Yoshino. This connection isn’t accidental, as Junpei’s powers weren’t naturally developed – Mahito manipulated his brain to awaken them. Junpei is similar to many other participants in the Culling Game, most of whom had their powers forcibly awakened by Kenjaku.
