Just over ten years ago, Kelly Sue DeConnick dramatically reshaped the character of Carol Danvers, transforming her into Captain Marvel. This reimagining elevated Carol from a supporting player in the Avengers universe to a leading superhero capable of headlining a blockbuster film. DeConnick is a skilled writer, and she’s recently brought her talent for developing compelling characters to Dark Horse Comics.
Following her work on FML, DeConnick is now launching Skate Ali, a new miniseries co-written with Sam Humphries and featuring art by Natacha Bustos, who is new to Dark Horse. The first issue is available today, and we’ve got an exclusive preview page for you – plus an extra page beyond what’s already been released!

Okay, so I’m dropping into a future version of Los Angeles, and it’s seriously slick with neon, but the city’s gone and made skateboarding illegal. No way that’s stopping me though – I’m Skate Ali, and I’m still rolling!
During the day, she’s a typical student trying to avoid trouble. But after dark, she transforms into a mysterious and rebellious street racer in Los Angeles.
When Ali unexpectedly enters the underground skateboarding scene, she meets the LA Skull Clan – a group of rebellious skaters led by the mysterious Skull Queen 9. Powered by a special energy called the Rush, this crew performs incredible stunts and boldly challenges the status quo.
Ali has a chance to really improve and stand out, but she’s worried about what others will think. Now she needs to choose: stick with what’s comfortable, or take a bold risk and shake things up?
Okay, so I just heard about this new comic and it sounds amazing. It’s being written by Kelly Sue DeConnick, who did Bitch Planet, and Sam Humphries, known for his work on Harley Quinn and Guardians of the Galaxy. The art is by Natacha Bustos, who’s worked on Moon Girl and Miles Morales, so visually it’s gonna be awesome. Basically, it’s a sci-fi story with skateboarding, punk rock vibes, and it’s all about friendship and standing up for yourself when life tries to push you around. Sounds like exactly the kind of thing I’d play – or, you know, read – right now!
Five-issue series.
What Happened in the Skate Ali Preview Pages?

The story opens by showing us a world where skateboarding is illegal. This immediately establishes our main character, Ali, as a rebel. We meet him attempting an incredibly difficult trick – riding a skateboard on a broken roller coaster – a feat only a few legendary skaters have ever accomplished.
Despite the risks, Ali is incredibly brave. In an amazing but unfortunate scene filmed by Bustos, she attempts a difficult maneuver and breaks her arm. The emergency room visit reveals the dangerous world she lives in, and the doctor, hoping to discourage her, writes “No more skating” on her cast.
Even from these few pages, it’s clear Ali doesn’t give up easily. She soon meets a group of skaters with incredible, almost magical skills, and she decides to challenge them. To find out what happens, you’ll have to read Skate Ali #1!
