Skyrim art lead knows “it’s a bit of a joke” how many times Bethesda has re-released the iconic RPG over the past 14 years: “It’s a great game. We want everyone to be able to play it”

The main artist behind Skyrim has admitted it’s become a running joke how many different versions of the game are now available.

Just when it seemed Bethesda had exhausted all options for re-releasing Skyrim, a new version of the 14-year-old role-playing game has appeared on the Switch 2. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim – Anniversary Edition was unexpectedly released on Nintendo’s new console yesterday, and it delivers the classic Skyrim experience fans know and love.

When Nintendo launched the new version of Skyrim, Nintendo Life spoke with lead artist Matt Carofano about the re-release. He explained that they’re big fans of Nintendo and enjoy bringing their games to Nintendo consoles. With the release of the Switch 2, they saw an opportunity to revisit a fan-favorite like Skyrim, enhance it, and deliver the best possible experience on the new hardware.

He explained that a new generation of gamers might be experiencing Skyrim for the very first time on the Switch 2, and that’s the key point.

Given how many times Skyrim has been re-released across different platforms – similar to games like Resident Evil 4, Rayman 2, and Street Fighter 2 – the latest announcement was surprisingly well-received. Bethesda’s Todd Carofano admits the frequent re-releases are almost a running joke, but emphasizes that Skyrim is a fantastic game and they want to make it accessible to everyone with the best possible experience.

Considering The Elder Scrolls 6 is likely many years away – probably not until at least 2070 – we can expect to see even more versions of Skyrim released in the future. The recent success of Skyrim on the NEX Playground, where it outsold the PlayStation 5 for a week, likely has Bethesda planning new editions already.
