For enthusiasts of Slow Horses, September promises to be an exciting month! Not only does the fifth season of the Apple TV+ spy drama commence airing, but the latest novel in Mick Herron’s Slough House series, which serves as its foundation, titled “Clown Town,” will also hit the shelves.
He disclosed that the story is connected to a truly disturbing, historical event executed by intelligence agencies during the peak of the conflicts, known as the Troubles. The novel, set in Slough House, explores various incidents from four decades past and their lasting, traumatic impact on the individuals involved.
Imagine the experience of a person who performs actions that appear beneficial for their nation or upholds the unity of the commonwealth, yet these deeds are questionable morally and emotionally distressing for them individually.

The official description for Clown Town goes like this: “Deception is routine for spies; they’re known for it. Slow-witted horse, River Cartwright, is currently on leave from work. With nothing better to do, and with his grandfather – a renowned ex-spy – already deceased, River delves into the secrets hidden in his grandfather’s library, trying to unravel the mystery surrounding a missing book.
The primary official at Regent’s Park, Diana Taverner, dislikes threats. Consequently, when individuals linked to a secret operation during the peak of the conflicts made veiled threats about unveiling the unsavory aspects of government security, Taverner transformed the situation into a chance.
At Slough House, a place for unsuccessful agents, Catherine Standish hopes for harmony among her colleagues. However, in Jackson Lamb’s view, these ‘slow horses’ should all be diligently working at their desks.
Since Taverner’s schemes often lead to harm, Lamb doesn’t intend to involve jesters. However, should these jesters disregard orders and act foolishly, any misfortune they face would hardly be Lamb’s responsibility.
“But they’re his clowns. And if they don’t all come home, there’ll be a reckoning.”
As Herron continues to publish novels rapidly, with Clown Town being his ninth, it’s likely that the Apple TV+ series will soon match his pace. The upcoming season 6 is set to adapt books six and seven, while it’s rumored that season 7, currently in development, would presumably cover book eight.
Clown Town will be released on 11th September 2025 – you can pre-order it now here.
