“Slow Horses” is a gripping British spy show featuring a talented ensemble cast. The series explores the full range of intelligence work at MI5, revealing it’s more complex than it appears. Based on the bestselling Slough House novels by Mick Herron, the show closely follows the storylines of the original books.
The show centers around a group of spies who were kicked out of their agency, MI5, but are determined to show they still have what it takes. Despite being considered misfits, they largely succeed in proving their worth as secret agents.
Their abilities are noticeably uneven, leading to big differences in how effective each agent is. This isn’t a problem exclusive to the team at Slough House, though.
Claude Whelan

First Desk Claude Whelan is widely considered the least intelligent member of the service, consistently demonstrating his incompetence since becoming head of MI5 in season 4. He’s clearly not a skilled spy, and it seems he achieved his high-ranking position through good fortune and being well-liked rather than merit.
Claude prioritizes appearances over actual accomplishments. He’s good at networking and gaining favor with those in power, but he doesn’t have the core abilities to truly succeed or justify his reputation. Essentially, he’s all talk and no substance as a leader or operative.
Roddy Ho
At Slough House, Roddy Ho is the team’s least impressive agent. He’s incredibly skilled with computers, but that’s where his talents end. Roddy struggles with social interactions, and his self-importance often prevents him from understanding what others are thinking or why they do things.
Roddy often has trouble forming genuine connections with people because he comes across as arrogant and tends to exaggerate when he speaks, rather than being direct and honest. Even so, MI5 has found him to be a more valuable asset than someone like Claude Whelan.
Shirley Dander

Shirley Dander isn’t particularly bright, but she’s not dumb either. She often makes careless errors and poor decisions. However, she possesses strong instincts that make her a useful asset at Slough House.
I’ve noticed Shirley is really good at picking up on things when she’s feeling okay – she often sees problems before anyone else does. However, she sometimes misinterprets what people mean, either from what they say or do, which can hold her back a little.
Catherine Standish
Catherine Standish is starting to prove herself as a truly capable spy. While she’s a long-time intelligence operative, she only recently began field work after joining Jackson Lamb’s team at Slough House.
Standish used to work directly for Charles Partner, a former head of MI5, but after he passed away, she dedicated the rest of her career to assisting Lamb. She’s very bright and capable, but still developing her self-assurance, likely due to a lack of extensive experience.
Standish is beginning to shine as she trusts Lamb and becomes more involved in the work. While she’s improving, she still needs to develop her ability to understand situations fully and uncover hidden truths.
River Cartwright
River Cartwright is a talented agent with a knack for problem-solving, a strong will, and an inventive mind. Eager to make a name for himself when he joined MI5, River decided to prove his abilities by secretly shadowing Diana Taverner, the agency’s Second Desk.
He managed this for a full day, and accidentally discovered private information about Diana she’d kept hidden. This led to River being deliberately set up to fail during a training exercise, ultimately resulting in his assignment to Slough House.
River is a talented agent who keeps getting better throughout the series Slow Horses. However, his biggest flaw is his tendency to go it alone. Because he’s so confident in his abilities, he often acts impulsively and without help, which has led to some avoidable errors.
Emma Flyte

Let’s switch gears now to Emma Flyte, who leads the security team – nicknamed the Dogs – at MI5. Though still early in her career, Emma has already proven herself to be a highly effective agent. She’s known for being incredibly detail-oriented, organized, and dedicated to following procedures.
Emma is a dedicated and effective Head of Security, fiercely protective of MI5. However, this strong commitment can sometimes prevent her from recognizing deeper problems when they exist. While Slow Horses suggests she’s beginning to change, her potential for growth remains limited until she becomes more open-minded.
Diana Taverner

Diana Taverner is a unique agent at MI5, and undeniably smart. She’s risen through the ranks to become the Second Desk, working alongside famous agents like Jackson Lamb, all while strategically advancing her own career and building her power within the agency.
Diana seems to have used questionable tactics to get where she is, bordering on cheating, but she’s also remarkably clever, detail-oriented, and well-prepared. While a few agents could potentially outsmart or embarrass her, Diana generally has the power and connections to neutralize any problems before they escalate.
J.K. Coe

At Slough House, J.K. Coe, a newer member of the team, quickly proves to be exceptionally bright. While undeniably eccentric, Coe possesses remarkable insight, a vast understanding of many subjects, and an almost unparalleled ability to analyze information.
Coe consistently anticipates threats before they escalate, and he’s remarkably accurate at predicting the actions of opposing groups, which has saved countless lives. However, he’s not infallible and does occasionally make mistakes.
In the show Slow Horses, J.K. Coe is a remarkably intelligent character, despite his flaws – like a dangerous lack of awareness, which tragically led to the death of an important politician while he was climbing down a ladder.
Jackson Lamb

Jackson Lamb is the most capable and intelligent agent at MI5 in Slow Horses. Having spent decades in the service, he’s a highly experienced field operative and a legendary figure within the organization.
Lamb is a very private person who keeps to himself, even with his colleagues. He’s skilled at appearing different than he is, and despite this, consistently provides the crucial insights that solve problems in Slow Horses.
Despite facing attacks and being made a scapegoat, Lamb remains calm and quickly resolves issues before they escalate. He’s undeniably the most intelligent character in Slow Horses, and deliberately maintains a low profile to keep his strategies hidden.
