Mackenzie Crook is back on the BBC with a new six-part series called Small Prophets. The show follows a man holding onto hope as he searches for his missing girlfriend.
It’s been seven years since Clea disappeared on Christmas Eve, and Michael’s life has felt frozen in time ever since. While she’s undoubtedly gone, he still wonders if there’s any hope left.
You know, it’s heartbreaking watching Michael. He never says it, but he clearly still hopes she’ll come back someday. And then, out of the blue, his dad comes through with this crazy idea – these little magical spirits called homunculi. Apparently, they can see the future, and Michael’s hoping they can tell him if she ever will.
Even though he doubted it would work, Michael carefully followed an old alchemy recipe – including some strange chanting – that he’d found in his father’s sketchbook. He hoped it would create the homunculi and, one way or another, finally give him the answers he was looking for.
Crook began writing Small Prophets after reading a reference in an old book about Paracelsus, a Swiss thinker and alchemist from the 1500s. He then cast Detectorists actor Pearce Quigley and collaborated with animator Ainslie Henderson, as well as his frequent partner Will Anderson from the Manchester studio Mackinnon & Saunders, to create the film’s unique creatures.
The music was the last essential element, and it truly brought the series to life. A beautifully sad and memorable original song and score, combined with the writing, is what makes the show so emotionally impactful.

Crook revealed to TopMob magazine that he collaborated with Cinder Well, an artist he greatly admires, to produce the soundtrack. He described being captivated by Cinder Well’s music for years.
He believes her original song, “The Wise Man’s Song,” has the potential to become a timeless and moving piece of music. She’s also planning to release it as a single soon.
Cinder Well, who also goes by Amelia Baker, is a musician from Los Angeles. She writes songs, composes music, and plays multiple instruments. Her website describes her style as having powerfully emotional vocals and dreamlike lyrics, all set to grand, cinematic music that blends classic and modern sounds.
The music and theme song for the show are described as creating a captivating, memorable, and subtly strong mood, according to Small Prophets’ Instagram page.
You can watch Small Prophets on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer, starting Monday, February 9th at 10pm. All six episodes will also be available to stream on iPlayer.
