Just two episodes remain of the popular Adult Swim show Smiling Friends before it ends. Despite an earlier announcement that the show wouldn’t be renewed for two more seasons, the creators, Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, are delivering a strong finish. Ahead of the final episode on April 12th, Adult Swim has released a special video celebrating the show’s unique and wildly popular animated world.
I’m a huge fan of Smiling Friends, and I’ve been loving the short episodes they’ve been releasing! The newest one, “Smiling Shorts: Card Game,” totally delivers on everything that makes the main series so great. It starts with almost everyone playing a simple card game, but, predictably, things quickly go off the rails thanks to Mr. Boss’s crew. One risky card pull sends everyone into survival mode, and the ending is absolutely wild – seriously, it features one of the creepiest creatures they’ve ever shown! You really need to check out this short; it’s a perfect little dose of Smiling Friends chaos.
Why is Smiling Friends Ending?

Michael Cusack shared that the decision to end Smiling Friends was a mutual one with Zach Hadel. They both felt it was the right time to conclude the series, especially after completing Season 3. According to Cusack, they were feeling both exhausted from years of work and proud of what they’d accomplished, leading them to believe that Season 3 could be a fitting end.
Adult Swim will air two new episodes of Smiling Friends next month, which will serve as the show’s conclusion, though they weren’t originally intended as a finale. The first episode, titled “Friend Bot (Version 12589218731809213528796879521),” has a synopsis that Cartoon Network jokingly says violates their terms of service. The final episode, “Charlie’s Uncle Dies And Doesn’t Come Back,” features Pim and Charlie meeting Charlie’s mysterious and mischievous uncle, and Allan behaving erratically.
Even though Smiling Friends is finishing up in April, fans can still enjoy the comedic talents of Hadel and Cusack through their earlier work. They regularly post funny gameplay videos with commentary on their YouTube channel, OneyPlays, and new episodes are still being released. Though it’s not Smiling Friends, OneyPlays is incredibly popular, with almost 1.5 million subscribers.
