A funny sketch has sparked excitement about a possible R-rated reimagining of Home Alone, with footage showing Wicked star Josh Gad playfully impersonating Kevin McCallister. The sketch features the Wet Bandits returning to the infamous house…and encountering all the same dangerous traps as before.
Everyone knows and loves Home Alone as a Christmas classic, and it always seems to be on TV during the holidays. Right now, both Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York are popular on Disney+, thankfully without any of the less-successful sequels appearing.
If you’re a dedicated fan of Home Alone – someone who knows all the lines by heart – Saturday Night Live‘s recent sketch offered a fresh take on a familiar story. The sketch started with Ariana Grande playing Kevin McCallister, complete with the iconic blonde hair and pajamas, waking up on Christmas morning. His mother (Ashely Padilla) returned home, quickly followed by the rest of the family – dad (Mikey Day), brothers (Jeremy Culhane and Tommy Brennan), and sister (Sarah Sherman).
Everyone forgets that the house is still full of booby traps from when Kevin defended it against the burglars. This leads to a series of hilarious accidents: Dad gets hit with a blowtorch while putting on his coat, one brother slips on toys and crashes into the piano, and another brother tries to put out Dad’s (fake) fire with a fire extinguisher that Kevin has mischievously filled with kerosene. To top it off, the second brother is ‘shot’ with a dart while getting a drink. The sketch gets even more over-the-top from there – you can watch the whole thing below.
‘Home Alone’ Is Still a Holiday Classic…but Could It Get a Legacy Sequel?
Every year around the holidays, Home Alone is incredibly popular on streaming services. But could we actually get a worthy sequel? One that doesn’t just introduce new characters and retread familiar ground without adding anything new? Macaulay Culkin actually has an idea for how a new Home Alone movie could work. He recently shared his thoughts in an interview, saying:
I’ve been thinking about a situation where I’m either a widower or divorced, raising a child on my own. I’m so focused on work that I’m not giving my kid enough attention, and they’re starting to get upset with me. It’s gotten to the point where my son won’t even let me into the house – he’s actually setting traps to keep me out!
Currently, there aren’t any new Home Alone movies in development, and that’s likely a good thing. While the first two films starring Macaulay Culkin were classics, the sequels haven’t measured up. The recent reboot, Home Sweet Home Alone, tried to connect to the original by bringing back Devin Ratray as Buzz McCallister, but it received negative reviews from both critics and viewers. You can watch all the Home Alone movies now on Disney+.
