Despite a season of largely unsuccessful political sketches on Saturday Night Live, the show brought back President Trump in several segments last night. James Austin Johnson’s remarkably accurate impression of the former president appeared both in the cold open, which focused on the New York City Mayoral Race, and in a funny sketch about the White House renovations.
Okay, so there was this hilarious pre-taped sketch where they did a parody of Property Brothers. Miles Teller was amazing playing both Drew and Jonathan Scott, and they were ‘helping’ a President Trump, played by Dwayne Johnson, and his wife Melania, brilliantly portrayed by Chloe Fineman. As you can imagine, Trump had the most ridiculous requests – and when it came to budget, he claimed it was somewhere between $350 million and… infinity! You really have to see the whole thing, it’s pretty great.
The ongoing renovations at the White House have sparked a lot of public discussion. Even though the government is currently facing a shutdown due to disagreements between Republicans and Democrats over the budget, the construction work continues, and people are sharing their strong opinions about it all over social media.
There’s debate about adding a larger ballroom. While the East Room only holds 200 guests, and events often require extra tents for dining, some worry that such a large construction project would harm the building’s historical character and seems insensitive considering recent worker layoffs.
The sketch is so effective because it perfectly captures familiar elements from HGTV shows. Like many homeowners on those programs, the Trumps discuss needing more space and wanting to renovate to create their dream home. It also accurately mimics the lighthearted teasing and playful banter common between cast members, such as brothers who jokingly poke fun at each other.
I also enjoyed the nods to Independence Day and Star Wars woven into the sketch. I particularly loved the visual of Trump pinning a picture of Jabba the Hutt’s palace – with Leia in her iconic costume – to his Pinterest mood board.
Miles Teller’s recent appearance on Saturday Night Live included several well-received sketches that are already popular online. The show’s opening sketch, which featured a portrayal of President Trump, gained attention for its take on the recent New York City Mayoral debate. A funny public service announcement featuring Teller as a Nashville Predators fan also proved to be a hit with viewers.
Saturday Night Live is coming back with new episodes soon, featuring Nikki Glaser and Glen Powell as hosts. I’m excited to see what these two bring to the show, and to watch the new cast members continue to develop and shine.
