For 50 years, Saturday Night Live has launched the careers of countless comedians, and it still helps rising stars expand their reach today. It’s always great to see current SNL cast members take their comedy to bigger platforms, and Sarah Sherman is the latest example. Her new HBO special, Sarah Squirm: Live + in the Flesh, debuted earlier this month, and she’s shared a funny story about how former castmate Bowen Yang reacted to it.
This project is a departure for Sherman, leaning into unsettling and deliberately shocking humor – a contrast to her typical work on Saturday Night Live. Given that Yang recently left SNL after the Christmas show, this type of comedy was new territory for him, which is why Sherman valued his feedback so much. She shared with People what he thought, and it apparently gave her exactly the confidence boost she needed.
He was yelling ‘No!’ because the material was really disturbing. Bowen said it perfectly captured his style. Ultimately, that’s all anyone can ask for – to work with incredibly talented people on a project that feels truly authentic to you.
Yang was one of many current and former Saturday Night Live cast members who showed up to support Sherman and her new comedy special. Yang’s positive reaction was exactly what Sherman expected, knowing her style. Receiving that kind of encouraging feedback from a long-time colleague who’s seen her perform through good and bad shows clearly meant a lot to Sherman.
Sarah Sherman’s newest project is Human vs. Hamster, a streaming competition she hosted on HBO Max in late 2024. Though the concept seemed odd at first, the show was surprisingly fun to watch. It demonstrated that Sherman has a range of talents beyond her work on Saturday Night Live.
It’s especially disappointing that Yang isn’t on Saturday Night Live anymore, knowing how much he enjoyed working with Sherman. Their collaborations, whether in sketches or on Weekend Update, were always fun to watch. With Yang gone, it might be a long time before we see them perform together again. He might return to the show eventually, but it’s unclear when that will be.
You can now watch Sarah Squirm: Live + in the Flesh on HBO Max, just like Human vs. Hamster. See if Bowen Yang’s reactions still feel real to you! If you’re a fan of Saturday Night Live, past episodes are also available on Peacock.
