The dance community is mourning one of their own.
Joshua Allen, the champion of season four of So You Think You Can Dance, passed away, his family told TMZ on October 1st. He was 36 years old.
Allen’s family didn’t share details about how the dancer and choreographer passed away, but they asked for “privacy and prayers” during this challenging period.
TopMob News has reached out to Allen’s family regarding his death but has not yet heard back.
Emmanuel Hurd, a frequent collaborator of Allen’s, was shocked to hear about his colleague’s passing. He described Allen as “a very honest, real person.”
“He often approached things differently than what people expected,” the creative director told TMZ. “And that’s precisely what made him successful.”
The dancer, who recently passed away at age 36, first gained recognition on season four of So You Think You Can Dance, the popular dance competition on Fox. The show also launched the careers of stars like Alison Holker, Tate McRae, and the late Stephen “tWitch” Boss. Boss, who tragically died in 2022, shared a friendly competitive spirit with Allen during their time on the same season of the show.
Allen shared with Entertainment Weekly that they were genuinely pleased for each other while working alongside Boss on the show. “We had a really strong connection and were among the closest people on set,” Allen explained.
After winning in 2008, Allen said he wanted to collaborate with Ludacris and Michael Jackson. He then appeared in the films Step Up 3D and Footloose (released in 2011). In 2016, Allen faced domestic violence charges in Los Angeles after an incident with his girlfriend. He accepted a plea deal, and in 2017, he received a one-year jail sentence as a result.

I was always glued to Allen’s social media – he was *constantly* thinking back on his days on So You Think You Can Dance, which, honestly, made me re-watch all his performances *again*! He’d also share memories of traveling to all those dance competitions – it was like living vicariously through him! It’s just so heartbreaking that his last post was a tribute to Malcolm Jamal-Warner, who passed away in July. It feels like a final, beautiful goodbye from a truly incredible artist.
As he wrote alongside a photo of himself with The Cosby Show alum, “Fly high King.”
