Solar Opposites Creator Reveals the Show Was Cancelled (But Hopes for More)

The animated series “Solar Opposites” is set to return for its sixth and concluding season on Hulu this Fall, however, contrary to expectations, it has been cancelled by the creators rather than being a self-imposed ending. Fans were taken aback earlier this year when they learned that Season 6 would be the last one. Despite facing challenges prior to the fourth season, the swift renewals for Seasons 5 and 6 suggested that Hulu had great confidence in the success of “Solar Opposites”. However, it looks like the show’s run is about to come to an end.

Over at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, I had a chat with Mike McMahan, one of the masterminds behind “Solar Opposites.” Contrary to what some might think, it wasn’t the creative team that chose to call it quits on their own accord. Instead, the show was cancelled by the network. However, even though the series has been terminated, the team is optimistic about resurrecting it with a possible new platform, viewing this as the closing of one chapter that may open to more adventures down the line.

Solar Opposites Creator Reacts to Show’s Cancellation

In response to queries about why Solar Opposites Season 6 marks the series’ conclusion, co-creator Mike McMahan shared, “One morning we realized we had been terminated by the network, so we decided it was time to wrap things up.” He added, “We could carry on, but since there would be no compensation, the work would be rather basic. Our artists need sustenance and medical care.” However, McMahan went on to say that despite this being the end of its broadcast, the team has left open the possibility for future installments.

Going into this season, we knew it was our last, but we see it as wrapping up the initial part of our story. It’s like a grand finale with many long-standing jokes and plotlines coming together, such as The Wall, Silver Cops, and more. Executive producer Josh Bycel mentioned that they hadn’t initially planned for this to be the final season, but they managed to tie all the separate stories together nicely, ensuring that by the end of it, the story arcs of Silver Cops, The Wall, and Solars are all brought back.

Solar Opposites Won’t Have a New Holiday Special Either

Bycel stated, “Those elements wouldn’t be possible without our regular visits to the Solars for their wild tales each episode.” McMahan concurred, “This season has been packed with everything we could muster. It’s absolutely mad!” However, they shared disappointing news that there won’t be any new holiday specials for the final episode this year. McMahan admitted, “We couldn’t create one this season. We gave it our best shot.” They also hinted at potential ideas for a future “Opposite Day” special and more, indicating their excitement about what’s to come.

For the time being, the animated series Solar Opposites will conclude with Season 6 on Hulu, set to air on October 13th. The streaming platform hints at the upcoming finale as follows: “Join this offbeat alien family as they engage in riotous antics, unraveling the last chapter of an epic saga while their captive human counterparts remain trapped within their fortified Wall. As Solar Opposites bid farewell, be prepared for unexpected humor around every corner.
