Over its six seasons on Hulu, *Solar Opposites* managed to tell more fully developed stories than many other shows. While it followed the adventures of four aliens who crash-landed on Earth, the show also featured a compelling and unexpected storyline about a tiny civilization struggling with survival, power, and corruption. This segment, known as The Wall, became a fan favorite, and viewers were just as eager to see how it would end as they were to see the main story conclude.
Season 6 of *Solar Opposites* revisited the storyline of The Wall, where the tiny residents desperately tried to return to their original size and lives. As expected with The Wall, things didn’t go smoothly, and their adventure ended with a surprising and emotional twist. ComicBook recently spoke with the show’s executive producers about how The Wall’s story came to a close. WARNING: This article contains spoilers for *Solar Opposites*.
The Wall Finally Comes to an End
Mike McMahan and Josh Bycel, the executive producers of the show, recently told ComicBook that the storyline for ‘The Wall’ wasn’t initially planned to be as expansive as it became. They originally intended it to wrap up after the first season with Tim and Cherie succeeding, but as they developed the story, they discovered opportunities to delve deeper into the narrative.
McMahan explained that they always anticipated ‘The Wall’ would be an extensive part of the show, and it ultimately turned out to be even longer than they initially planned. Originally, they envisioned ‘The Wall’ lasting only one season, with a new element introduced in the second season. However, they enjoyed working with ‘The Wall’ so much and realized there were still more stories to explore with it.
Instead of creating a separate story each season, they let *The Wall* explore different genres, and that approach shaped the final part of the story in Season 6.
Instead of abandoning the idea of ‘The Wall,’ we started focusing on what different themes and styles we could explore each season. The first season was inspired by historical conflicts like the War of the Roses, with a gritty, ‘Mad Max’ feel. Then we did a murder mystery, followed by a Western and a season focused on creatures. This current season is a unique blend of the suspense of ‘Apollo 13’ and ‘The Abyss,’ combined with the character study of ‘Pygmalion.’ Ultimately, ‘The Wall’ was always meant to show that even the best plans can fail, that people are imperfect, and that power often leads to corruption.
Looking back, that last sentence really hit me – it perfectly showed where the story of The Wall was headed and how skillfully the writers tied everything together. It felt like a truly satisfying ending.
Throughout the years of upheaval and the removal of numerous dictators, Cherie always appeared to be a leader untouched by the desire for power. She consistently prioritized the well-being of the people. However, her last decision proved that even someone with the best intentions can succumb to selfishness, and that no one is truly immune to corruption.
Once Cherie found a way to reverse the shrinking process, she made a life-altering choice that trapped everyone inside The Wall forever. Because her baby was born while they were small, the child couldn’t survive at normal size in the outside world. Cherie decided to stay inside The Wall with her baby, and convinced everyone else to do the same. While they’ll now have the supplies they need, she kept her personal reasons secret and prioritized her own desires over their freedom. As a result, The Wall’s residents will never be able to leave.
According to McMahan, the season will conclude with the people of The Wall emerging victorious. They’ll gain control of the shrink ray, leading Cherie to choose not to enlarge herself again because of her child’s inability to do so. She’ll also decide to deceive the inhabitants of The Wall. Despite the seemingly idyllic future – with Yumyulack providing everything they need and The Wall becoming a paradise – there’s a sense that things won’t ultimately be right. Cherie will have fallen into the same trap as previous power-seekers like the Duke, Tim, and Sisto, and that never ends well.
The main message of The Wall is to stay aware and protect each other. There will always be people who try to control others and act with harmful intentions. The film shows that controlling people always has negative consequences, no matter who is doing it, and ultimately, there’s a price to pay. That’s the message it leaves you with.
It’s uncertain if *Solar Opposites* will return, but if it does, viewers are eager to find out what happens with Cherie and the other residents of The Wall following her major choice.
All six seasons of Solar Opposites are now available to stream on Hulu.
