The streaming service has approved a new animated show that could be just as popular as Solar Opposites. They’ve had good results with adult animation in the past, and this is their latest win.
Hulu has greenlit the new animated comedy series Deano, created by Dean Thomas and David Ferrier. The show centers on Deano, an 8-year-old boy who’s both playful and kind, and whose adventures often become the main event for his family and the whole neighborhood.
The first season of Deano will debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and will then be available on Hulu and Disney+ for viewers outside the UK. The season will have eight episodes, each approximately 30 minutes long.
The animated series Deano comes from Joe Brumm, the creator of Bluey. He’s joined by producers Greg Basser, Tracey Robertson, Ross Shuman, Nathan Mayfield, and Tracey Vieira from Hooligan Animation, and Adam Bailey representing BBC Studios. BBC Studios is leading the production, with additional production support from 20th Television Animation and Hooligan Animation.
Disney’s Deano tells the story of a spirited and mischievous boy who appears tough on the outside, but is actually kind-hearted. He’s a lovable, feisty kid navigating a difficult childhood in a rundown neighborhood and a neglected home.
The story highlights how Deano doesn’t realize the challenges he faces, and treats everyone with the same kindness, whether they’re struggling teens or the town’s police chief. A central part of the story is his friendship with Kit, a shy friend from a wealthy background. Kit doesn’t fully understand Deano’s difficulties but is inspired by his energy and positive outlook. Together, they navigate a harsh world that often lacks compassion, but Deano remains remarkably optimistic, showing how enjoyable life can be.
If the name Deano rings a bell, it’s because this new series builds on Thomas and Ferrier’s earlier animated shorts, Childish Deano, which came out in 2022. Childish Deano featured the same characters and basic idea as the upcoming Deano series, and Thomas himself provided the voice for the character of Deano.
Hulu Found Success With Solar Opposites
Hulu’s new animated comedy, Deano, seems like exactly what subscribers have been wanting. It comes after the popular sci-fi sitcom wrapped up its six-season, 63-episode run with a particularly dramatic finale.
Before the release of Solar Opposites Season 6, executive producer Justin Roiland discussed what the future of the show might hold. He described Solar Opposites as more than just a TV show – it’s a platform for telling different stories, almost like a network within a show, always focusing on family dynamics.
The best part is knowing there won’t be a last episode like with many animated family shows. We want the story to continue as long as the family does.
The show concluded on Oct. 13, 2025, and now Hulu has found the perfect replacement with Deano.
Deano will first be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, and will then be released on Hulu and through Hulu on Disney+.
