Season 3 will reveal the main antagonists of Sung Jinwoo’s story to viewers who haven’t read the manga: the Monarchs. Although we briefly saw two of them at the end of Season 2, Season 3 will properly introduce them and hint at the conflict brewing between them and the Rulers. However, fans won’t have long to get to know these new villains, as the strongest Monarch introduced in Season 3 will quickly be removed from the story.
I’m really excited for the third season of Solo Leveling! It looks like Sung Jinwoo is finally going to confront one of the Monarchs – Legia, also sometimes called Regia. She’s the Monarch of the Beginning and rules over the Giants. This fight seems incredibly important, and it’s going to reveal a lot about the history and world of Solo Leveling. Knowing Sung Jinwoo, though, I have a feeling this Monarch won’t last very long – he tends to defeat his enemies pretty quickly!
Sung Jinwoo Kills His First Monarch, Legia, in Solo Leveling Season 3
Season 3 of Solo Leveling will adapt the light novel’s story through the International Guild Conference arc. Given how Seasons 1 and 2 have progressed, this is a reasonable prediction, meaning the anime will cover events beyond the Japan Crisis Arc, including Sung Jinwoo’s battle with Legia.
This part of the story focuses on Sung Jinwoo battling enormous magical creatures that appeared from a massive, high-level gate in Tokyo. Even after defeating these giants and what seemed to be their leader, the gate stayed open, hinting that the true boss was still hidden inside. As Jinwoo explored deeper, he discovered a gigantic, chained humanoid being – Legia, the Monarch of the Beginning – who was actually the gate’s real boss.
Realizing how powerful Sung Jinwoo had become, Legia cast a spell called Oath of Sincerity. This spell forces both the caster and the person it’s cast on to tell the truth. Under the spell’s effect, Legia explained the real reason for the war and revealed the Rulers’ plan: they were trying to fill the Earth with Mana to protect it from destruction during their fights.
Legia offers Jinwoo valuable information and promises to fight with him if freed, but Jinwoo remains wary of trusting him. Jinwoo understands Legia would support the Shadow Monarch, and knows Legia would never side with humans.
The original Monarch is solely focused on winning the war, viewing humans as expendable. This understanding causes Jinwoo to betray Legia, leading to a swift and decisive victory for Jinwoo. After defeating Legia, Jinwoo emerges from the S-Rank Gate significantly stronger – gaining seven levels – and with a clearer understanding of his role as the new Shadow Monarch.
Legia’s Swift Death Forever Made Him an Underrated Powerhouse Among Solo Leveling’s Monarchs
Legia never stood a chance against Jinwoo. The Rulers had magically bound him to limit his power, and even though Jinwoo broke one of those bonds, freeing Legia’s right arm, Legia remained unable to move. He could only swing his arm desperately, but it wasn’t enough.
Although Sung Jinwoo defeated Legia at the S-Rank Gate with relative ease, this doesn’t accurately reflect Legia’s true power as a Monarch. Because their fight wasn’t a fair match, many fans of Solo Leveling underestimate Legia, despite him being one of the strongest Monarchs in the series. Since Antares won’t appear until later, Legia will likely be considered the most powerful Monarch throughout Season 3.
To understand just how powerful Legia is, the best way is to look at the creatures under his command: the giants. These giants are considered among the most powerful magical beasts, surpassed only by Antares’ dragons. Given that Legia controls the second most powerful type of magical beast, it’s logical to conclude he’s the second strongest Monarch after Antares.
Ashborn will appear in Season 3 of Solo Leveling during Jinwoo’s battle with the Architect at the Carthenon Temple. It’s important to understand that Ashborn—and Jinwoo after gaining his power—isn’t just a Monarch, even though he later adopts that title after leaving the Rulers. Ashborn used to be the strongest of the Brilliant Light, a unique being. This makes him unpredictable and a key player in the conflict between the Monarchs and Rulers.
Even if we consider Ashborn to be a true Monarch, Legia was likely a bit stronger physically. As the King of the Giants, Legia would have primarily used his immense strength to win fights. While Ashborn uses special abilities to gain an advantage, Legia would have mostly depended on his raw power.
Based on the fight between Legia’s avatar and Sung Jinwoo in Tokyo, even a weakened version of Legia could defeat half of Jinwoo’s Shadow Soldiers with a single sword strike. This avatar is comparable to Baran’s, meaning it’s far less powerful than the true Monarch of Beginning. Even this display of power hints at how incredibly strong Legia would be at his peak, which likely explains why the Rulers targeted him early on.
Legia Will Be Sung Jinwoo’s Strongest Opponent in Season 3 By Far (Yes, Stronger Than Thomas Andre)
Legia, the Monarch of the Beginning, is arguably the most powerful monarch we’ve seen in Solo Leveling Season 3, and possibly the strongest overall. While Antares might prove to be a challenge, if the season continues to follow the original story, Legia will likely be the strongest monarch to appear, both in terms of power and ultimately, their fate.
Whether Legia is the second or third strongest Monarch (depending on how you count Jinwoo’s future power) is up for discussion, but he’s undoubtedly Jinwoo’s biggest challenge in Season 3. After Legia, Thomas Andre will be Jinwoo’s main opponent, but despite appearing stronger, his power is mostly for show.
Legia wasn’t as strong of an opponent for Jinwoo as Thomas Andre because the Rulers had placed magical restraints on him, limiting his power. Thomas Andre, on the other hand, was able to use all of his abilities against Jinwoo. Despite using his most powerful form, Thomas Andre was still easily defeated.
During the Monarch’s War Arc, Thomas Andre couldn’t compete with the Beast Monarch in a direct fight, highlighting the huge power gap between Monarchs and others. Since Legia is probably even more powerful than the Beast Monarch, Thomas Andre wouldn’t stand a chance against the King of the Giants.
If Legia had been at his peak during the Japan Crisis, he probably would have defeated Sung Jinwoo when they first fought at the S-Rank Gate. Jinwoo only won because Legia was weakened and unable to fight properly. This early loss ultimately led to Legia’s downfall, leaving him remembered as a fighter who never reached his full strength. Despite this, Legia is still considered the strongest Monarch introduced in Season 3 of Solo Leveling, and the biggest challenge Sung Jinwoo will face in the upcoming anime season.
