Solo Leveling: Ragnarok artist steps away from manhwa

Jin announced in a letter that he’s pausing work on Solo Leveling Ragnarok to fulfill his mandatory military service. All South Korean men are required to serve in the military, a rule that’s been in place since the mid-1900s.

Jin, the artist behind Solo Leveling, shared that he was a fan of the series even before he started working on it, recalling his enjoyment of it throughout school. He was initially inspired to begin drawing by the work of artist Jang Sung-rak, and that inspiration continues to shape his style today (via ComicBook.com).

Jin talked about his career as an artist and mentioned he was surprised and excited to get the chance to create side stories for Solo Leveling. He recalled vividly how he felt when he first learned about the project.

The artist announced he’s leaving the project, explaining that he needs to focus on a period of military service. He stated he’s finishing up his work on the title and taking a temporary leave, but views this as a pause rather than a permanent departure, seeing it as a time to prepare for future work.

Jin announced that a new artist, also trained by Solo Leveling’s original artist Jang Sung-rak, will be taking over the project. He expressed his gratitude to fans and supporters. In his farewell message, he shared that he’ll cherish this experience and continue to improve his art, hoping to create work he can be proud of, and thanked everyone for their support.

Jang Sung-rak, known as Dubu, passed away in 2022. Since then, multiple artists have taken on the work. As Jin explains, he first illustrated the spin-off stories before becoming the main artist for Ragnarok.
