Netflix has given the go-ahead for a live-action adaptation of the popular South Korean fantasy series, “Solo Leveling,” originally announced by Kakao Entertainment in January 2025. An actor has been selected to portray the main character, Sung Jin-woo. The project is based on the namesake web novel by Chugong, which was serialized starting in 2016 and later transformed into a webtoon with artwork from Jang Sung-rak (Dubu) of Redice Studio.
Netflix to produce Solo Leveling live-action series with Byeon Woo-seok as Sung Jin-woo
Production on a live-action version of the popular series “Solo Leveling” is now underway at Netflix. In this production, Byeon Woo-seok has been chosen to play the lead character, Sung Jin-woo. Before becoming an actor, Byeon Woo-seok started out as a model in the fashion industry.
This individual portrayed Poong Woon-ho in the 2022 Netflix production titled “20th Century Girl” and Ham Jin-woo in the 2023 romantic drama movie “Soulmate”. Additionally, you might recognize him from Korean dramas like “Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency”, “Record of Youth”, “Moonshine”, and “Strong Girl Nam-soon”.
Netflix is teaming up with Kakao Entertainment and SANAI PICTURES to co-produce a series, which Kakao Entertainment first announced back in January 2025. At that time, they revealed in a press statement that the project was still in the early stages of planning and development, and that the script was being worked on within their media division.
Details regarding the upcoming live-action series based on Solo Leveling are scarce, but this is understandable considering the franchise’s massive fan base as a valuable intellectual property. Following its initial release as a web novel, the franchise has since grown to encompass webtoons, anime, music, and games.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share the excitement over this phenomenal anime that has captivated audiences worldwide. With an astounding cumulative view count of 14.3 billion, it’s no wonder why this series is taking the world by storm! The Japanese debut of its anime adaptation by A-1 Pictures took place on January 7, 2024, and the anticipation for more was so high that a Season 2 premiered just a year later, on January 5, 2025. To top it off, this incredible anime swept nine categories at the prestigious 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, including Anime of the Year, Best Action, and Best Character, leaving fans like me in awe! (Catch it all on Netflix!)
