It’s been over a year since the second season of Solo Leveling came out, and there’s still no official news about Season 3. Adding to the wait, the spin-off series, Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, is also on hold because the artist is serving in the military for about 18 to 21 months. 2026 isn’t looking great for fans so far, with the only new content coming from Netmarble, the company behind the Solo Leveling: Arise game. They’ve been releasing short stories on the official website that focus on lesser-known characters from the main story or characters created specifically for the game.
The newest installment, Hunter Origin #28, focuses on Reiji Sugimoto, a top-level Hunter from Japan. He and his guild were involved in the popular Jeju Island Raid, an arc widely considered the best in the series and adapted in the anime’s second season. While South Korean Hunters were already dealing with a major dungeon crisis, the arrival of the Japanese hunters complicated things further. This one-shot story picks up right after the events of the Jeju Island Arc.
What Happens to Sugimoto Reiji After The Jeju Island Arc in Solo Leveling?

Throughout the main storyline, the Draw Sword Guild – Japan’s most powerful guild, boasting several top-level Hunters – was initially led by Goto Ryuji. He hoped to use the Jeju Island Raid to prove himself worthy of becoming a National Hunter. However, he underestimated the dungeon boss, Beru, who turned out to be much stronger than anticipated. The guild suffered heavy losses, including Ryuji himself, and Reiji took over as the new Guild Master.
This story begins with Reiji’s first encounter with Ryuji, who rescued Reiji and his friend, Ka-yo, from dangerous monsters. Reiji later became a powerful, top-level Hunter and joined the Japanese Hunters Association, but he soon discovered the organization was willing to risk people’s lives for its own purposes. On what should have been his wedding day, Reiji was sent on an emergency mission. When he returned, he found the wedding venue destroyed and, tragically, couldn’t save Ka-yo. Determined to fix the broken system, he teamed up with Ryuji.
Reiji fully supported Ryuji, believing he could save lives, but things turned out much worse than expected. Ryuji’s actions resulted in a terrible tragedy on Jeju Island, and Reiji subsequently became the leader of the guild. Feeling defeated, Reiji was reminded of Ka-yo’s memories, which gave him the strength to carry on. The story concludes with Reiji becoming a Guild Master, continuing his efforts to improve his country. Although the main storyline doesn’t reveal much about his past, the Hunter Origin story details his hardships and the pain he endured after becoming a Hunter.
