Frictional Games, the studio behind popular horror games, recently revealed their next project at The Game Awards. The new game, called Ontos, seems to be inspired by one of their most famous titles, Soma.
The new game, Ontos, is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC sometime in 2026. The game’s creators at Frictional Games have made connections to their previous title, Soma, both in the game’s trailer and its description. Based on the trailer, these similarities are quite apparent.
The game delves deeply into psychological themes, prompting players to think about the nature of existence through a science fiction lens. According to the developers, players will encounter unsettling truths about reality and have their beliefs challenged. The game also features a branching storyline where choices matter, and players will experience the repercussions of their decisions.
The 2015 game Soma was a horror title that explored themes of identity and what it means to be a person. Though not quite as scary as Frictional Games’ Amnesia series, it was praised for its thoughtful and complex story.
Some viewers recognized the voice in the trailer as belonging to Stellan Skarsgård, the actor who has appeared in shows like Andor and films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Mamma Mia!. The trailer also gives a quick glimpse of his character, who appears to be wearing very ornate clothing.
The Steam page for Ontos hints at mysterious experiments, a search for “the ultimate truth,” and the importance of planning ahead. It appears Frictional Games is building on the gameplay style of Amnesia: The Bunker, focusing on interactive, system-based mechanics. Players will need to gather resources, operate machines, and think strategically. Similar to The Bunker, puzzles won’t have just one correct answer.
Both The Bunker and the upcoming Ontos feature complex, maze-like environments. Ontos, specifically, will be a sprawling moon base with casinos, theaters, pools, caves, and other diverse locations. Frictional Games says these locations will be filled with different groups and hidden mysteries.
The studio started hinting at this game several months ago with cryptic websites, unclear videos, and a strange update to their game Soma, which included hidden secrets.
