Sonic 4 Reportedly Casts Legendary Actor in Key Role (& Fans Have Ideas on Who They’re Playing)

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies are among the most successful adaptations of video games ever made, and a big reason is the talented cast. From Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic to Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden as Sonic’s friend Tom, each actor perfectly embodies their character, making the films enjoyable for everyone. As the series has continued, the cast has become even more impressive. Keanu Reeves voiced Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Kristen Bell is voicing Amy Rose in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Now, reports say that an Oscar-winning actor has joined the cast of Sonic 4.

Industry analyst Jeff Sneider recently revealed that Sir Ben Kingsley has joined the cast of Sonic 4 in an important, but currently undisclosed, role. Fans are already buzzing with guesses about who he might play, with suggestions including Eggman Nega or the voice of Metal Sonic.

Who Could Ben Kingsley Play in Sonic the Hedgehog 4?

Details about the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 haven’t been released yet, but the movie will likely continue the story from the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That ending introduced both Amy Rose and the villain Metal Sonic, both of whom first appeared in the game Sonic the Hedgehog CD, which heavily features time travel. This suggests the new movie will also involve time travel, borrowing ideas from Sonic CD and other Sonic games that explore that concept. Because of this, some fans think actor Ben Kingsley might be playing Eggman Nega, a time-traveling villain from the Sonic universe.

In the Sonic series, Eggman Nega is Dr. Robotnik’s ancestor and, like him, wants to take over the world. Interestingly, Eggman Nega actually looks down on Robotnik, believing his repeated defeats by Sonic have damaged their family’s name. He tries to fix this – in his opinion – by going back in time to cause trouble in the present, hoping it will secure his success in the future. Because of this, Eggman Nega would be a fitting villain if Sonic the Hedgehog 4 includes time travel.

A potential storyline for Sonic 4 involves Eggman Nega traveling to the past – Sonic’s present – to alter his family’s future. If this happens, it would be exciting to see if Jim Carrey would reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik. While the story doesn’t need present-day Eggman, having Carrey involved would make it much more entertaining. The relationship between Eggman Nega and Robotnik is full of potential, offering a chance for funny interactions where Nega constantly criticizes Robotnik’s failures. This setup could even lead to an unexpected team-up between Sonic and Robotnik to stop Nega from taking over. However, all of this relies on whether or not Carrey agrees to return, which hasn’t been decided yet.

The world of Sonic has a rich history with many characters, so there are plenty of possibilities for what role Sir Ben Kingsley will play. The fact that it’s described as a ‘key role‘ suggests it’s a significant part, and filmmakers rarely cast actors of Kingsley’s caliber for minor roles. He’s probably playing a major character, and he’s sure to be a great addition to the franchise. His performance as Trevor Slattery in the Marvel Cinematic Universe proves he can handle comedic roles in big-budget films, making his involvement in the Sonic universe very exciting.
