Sega will be at tomorrow’s Xbox Partner Preview, and it looks like a definitive version of Sonic Frontiers is on the way. South Korea’s game rating board recently approved Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition, according to Gematsu, suggesting an announcement could be coming soon.
Sega and Sonic Team haven’t officially announced or even suggested a Definitive Edition was being developed. After its release in November 2022 on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, the 3D platformer received three large free updates in 2023, culminating in ‘The Final Horizon,’ which added nine new Cyber Space levels and a difficult final boss.
I’m really hoping this means we’ll get some new stuff to play, but even more exciting is the possibility that this game could finally come to the Nintendo Switch 2! I wouldn’t be shocked if we hear something official tomorrow, honestly.
While Sonic Frontiers has been a big hit, it’s not the only recent success for the franchise. Sonic X Shadow Generations, released in 2024, has already sold over two million copies. Last year’s Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds also sold over a million copies quickly, though Sega Sammy’s CFO, Koichi Fukuzawa, noted it didn’t quite meet the company’s sales expectations.
The game is still being updated! Mega Man is available now for players who have purchased it, and Goro Majima from Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Red from Angry Birds will be added as free characters in April. Arle from Puyo Puyo will join the roster in May.
