Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Franchise is Getting an “Event Film” in 2028

Sega and Paramount Pictures are already planning Sonic the Hedgehog 4, scheduled for 2027, but they’re also developing another Sonic movie. This new film is being described as a large-scale “event film” and will expand the Sonic universe. Paramount recently added two untitled movies to its schedule: one based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the other this new Sonic project.

Paramount hasn’t revealed many details about the upcoming movie. They’ve even kept the title secret and haven’t officially confirmed it’s a new Sonic the Hedgehog film. However, because it’s described as an “event film” within the Sonic universe, it suggests this movie could be bigger and more ambitious than previous installments.

The lack of information about the new movie has sparked a lot of fan theories. Because Shadow the Hedgehog was successfully introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, many believe this new film could be a standalone story focused on Shadow, potentially with Keanu Reeves reprising the role. This could also allow Sega and Paramount to introduce characters more connected to Shadow, like Rouge the Bat, rather than focusing solely on Sonic’s world.

Paramount is still keeping details under wraps about the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. However, they have confirmed Neal H. Moritz, known for producing the Sonic the Hedgehog films, will be leading the project. Like Sonic the Hedgehog, the movie will blend live-action footage with computer-generated animation and will, of course, feature Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo.

A fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie is planned for release in theaters on March 19, 2027. Currently, Paramount has scheduled it as the only film to come out on that date. Although details are still unconfirmed, most of the original cast, including Ben Schwartz as Sonic, are expected to return.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have been a huge hit for Paramount, earning over $1 billion worldwide. The first film came out in 2020, followed by a sequel in 2022, which together brought in $725.2 million. The recently released third movie, which came out in December 2024 and grossed $312 million worldwide, pushed the entire series past the $1 billion mark.

You can find more information about the movie series in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie pack DLC, which came out for Sonic X Shadow Generations in December 2024.
